Harvey is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,031 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is served by the Harvey-Webb Community School District. The first post office in Harvey was established on December 12, 1872, and named for David Harvey, a merchant and political figure in the town. The first building in the town was built by George W. Pullen on the corner of Washington Street and Kilpatrick Avenue. In 1878, two brothers who were farmers founded a settlement near present-day Harvey that became known as Bentonville. In 1879, James Fenton opened a store there and called it "Fenton's." A grist mill was also founded there around this time. By 1886, all of what is now McHenry County had been acquired by Illinois; so Hawkins became the county seat of McHenry County On February 14th, 1888 (the day after Valentine's Day), an act to establish an Agricultural Extension Service within Cook County was passed by the General Assembly. This service would become known as "Harvey" after David Harvey who had donated land for its establishment There were no schools in this new township until 1893 when one was built at what is now 3rd & State Streets which served families from both sides of the Great Lakes River which flowed through town during those days
