The name “Harvey” comes from a Shawnee word meaning “big landowner.” In 1855, the Illinois General Assembly created a township called Harvey Township in Cook County. On September 1, 1866, Harvey Township was organized as a village by an act of the state legislature. The first mayor and council were elected by popular vote on November 3, 1866. Since its establishment as a village, Harvey has grown significantly! In 1970, it had a population of over 1,000 residents and in 2008 it reached 2,500 residents! In addition to its population growth, Harvey has seen significant economic development over the years! In 1974 it became home to Fox Valley Chemical Corporation which is now one of Chicago’s largest employers.
