Harvey is located on the east bank of the Kankakee River, about 15 miles (24 km) north of Chicago and 25 miles (40 km) south of St. Louis. Harvey was founded in 1871 by John D. Rockefeller as a manufacturing center for cotton textiles and shoe leathers. In 1905, the company merged with two other companies to form United States Rubber Company. The company went bankrupt in 1921 and its assets were sold to General Motors in 1924.
