The Harvey, Illinois Coast Guard Station was founded on October 12, 1892. The station is located in the town of Harvey and its mission is to provide leadership and support for the community through education, law enforcement and emergency services. The Coast Guard Station has been a part of the community since its inception. In 1902, it was decided that a coast guard station should be established in Harvey due to concerns about shipments of oil entering the harbor from Texas. From then until 1941 when World War II began, the Coast Guard Station operated out of two buildings on First Street. In 1941, after World War II ended, the Coast Guard Station moved to new quarters on Third Street in Harvey. The current building were constructed between 1951-1957 as part of a larger renovation project which included the construction of three other structures totaling $27 million dollars. Since its inception, the Coast Guard Station has played an important role in maintaining maritime safety and security along Illinois’s coastline. In addition to providing resources for local communities such as law enforcement and emergency response; The Coast Guard also provides training for local officers and firefighters who may need access to more advanced techologies during emergencies or disaster situations.

Harvey, Illinois is a small town in the Kane County seat of Evanston. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. The Harvey community is located on the central edge of Chicago, about 2 miles (3 km) north of the city's downtown area. Harvey was platted in 1866 by George Q. Cook and named for him. The Harvey-North Side Railroad crossed through Harvey in 1887 and served as a transportation hub for businesses on North Side streets adjacent to the railroad tracks. The line closed in 1965 but its remnants still run along blocks of north side streets near what is now State Street NE. In 2008, Harvey became one of three communities in Chicago to have their own governing body composed of an elected mayor, four trustees, and twenty-one members who represent single-family neighborhoods within their boundaries; other nearby communities are Humboldt Park and Englewood

The Coast Guard has been responsible for law enforcement on our nation's coasts since 1917 when it began its operations at Governors Island. In 1933, Samuel Eliot Morison wrote "A History of American Naval Forces" which detailed how America's navy had developed over time from small coastal vessels to a powerful nuclear-powered fleet. The Coast Guard played an important role in World War II and during that time made numerous contributions to the war effort such as rescuing downed pilots and troops from enemy ships. After the war, the Coast Guard saw increasing concerns over oceanographer satellite mapping of coastline due to potential threats posed by piracy and other maritime crime. The development of new technology allowed for increased patrols along our coastlines and eventually led to the creation of two groups within the Coast Guard specifically tasked with combating piracy - Operation Neptune's Spear (1986) and Operation Endeavor (1998). Harvey was a small town in Hancock County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2000 census. It is now part of the city of Champaign. Harvey was named after George Harvey, an early settler and one of the original pioneers in Hancock County. The first post office in Harvey opened on July 5, 1836. The first settlers in Harvey were three men, Wm. Hankson, James Higginbotham and John Scudder. In 1853-54 there were only nine residents in Harvey; by 1870 it had grown to over fifty people with four stores and two churches. In 1887 a new railroad line was built through Hancock County and the town began to boom as businesses increased traffic along the new track. However, within five years the tracks had been abandoned and most of the buildings were destroyed by fire or tornado damage while all but one store still stand today including its original building which currently houses a restaurant called "The Harvey". On November 7th 1905 a tornado touched down near Harvey just east of town destroying most of what remains from that day’s storm except for some rebuilt homes which are now used as museum specimens
