After the war, many of the original residents decided to move away due to changes in postwar America and economic decline within their own community. However, many of those who remained continued to live there through the years until it officially dissolved as a municipality on December 1, 2000. Hanover Park was named for George Washington Harris (1759-1824), an early settler who purchased land near what is now Hanover Park from Captain Abraham Forrest on November 10, 1806. Harris had been interested in purchasing land east of Chicago because he believed that this area would become one of Chicago's most important commercial districts and he hoped to use it as a winter home while erecting his new house on its site. At first glance, Hanover Park may seem like just another small village located within Cook County - but its rich history has made it something much more special. For starters, it's home to one of Illinois' earliest agricultural societies - the Society for Promoting Agriculture and Manufactures - which was founded in 1819 by some of Illinois' leading contemporaries including Abraham Lincoln and Daniel Webster! Additionally, Hanover Park has also played host to significant political events throughout its history; such as being where President James Kahl served as Mayor from 1868-1871 and where Vice President Hannibal Hamlin held office from 1901-1905! Finally, given its close proximity to downtown Chicago - making it easily accessible for both locals and visitors alike - Hanover Park remains an essential part of both local culture and municipal life today.
