The Illinois Air National Guard's Hanover Park detachment (HANP) was founded in 1947. The 1st Lt. John C. Reilly and Maj. Charles W. Ghent, Jr., were the first officers to be assigned to the detachment as part of an effort to create a nucleus of airmen who could provide security for the airport during its early years. In 1949, HANP became a provisional unit and was redesignated as the 11th Bombardment Wing (11BW). The wing served at Hanscom AFB for nine years before moving to MacDill AFB, Florida where it served untilactivated on 9 April 1957.

Hanover Park was laid out in 1847 by John and Jane Hathaway. It was named for Prince Frederick Augustus of Hesse-Cassel, who had come to America to study law and become a U.S. citizen in 1827. A post office called Hanover Park was established in 1848, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1960. The village became an incorporated municipality on November 1, 1961; its first mayor was Harry Carver III. The current mayor is Barack Obama

A school was organized in 1840 and a church built in 1845. In 1865, the railroad reached Hanover Park and the town became an important railway depot. In 1902, the original school building burned down and a new one was built on land donated by Mrs Anna J.Hansen. In 1951, an old mill that had been used for cornmeal production was replaced by a new one that produced paper products such as envelopes and napkins. During World War II, Hanover Park served as Headquarters for U-2 pilots flying over Nazi Germany from bases at nearby Edwardsville and Aurora Heights. After the war ended, many of these pilots moved to Chicago to start their own families and continue their aviation careers; some even founded their own airlines! Today, Hanover Park remains a small town with close-knit community ties dating back to its earliest days as a settlement on Hennepin County's Frontier Road west of Rockford."
