Gurnee, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and home to the Gurnee Civic Center. The area that would become Gurnee was settled by Germans in 1814. The first known settler was Johann Hecker. In 1835, George Stephenson built a cotton gin on the site of present-day Gurnee for the purpose of manufacturing chrysolite glass from coal tar. In 1857, Fenton Mott became one of the first settlers in what would become Gurnee when he purchased land from David Kapp and erected a cabin on Prairie Road east of present-day State Street. By 1860, there were over 50 settlers living in what would become Gurnee; many had come from Chicago or other parts of Illinois after being driven out by Native Americans during the American Civil War. In 1865, John Jernigan (1812-1892) established a grocery store and general merchandise business at 9th and Dearborn Streets in what would become Gurnee; it remains as one of its most important businesses today. Jernigan also served as mayor (1901-1902) and postmaster (1896-1900). One reason why Gurnee grew rapidly during this time was its location midway between two major railroads: The Erie Railroad located just north of town and Peoria & Northern Railway located just south of town made it easy for goods to be transported into and around town without having to go through Chicago or other larger cities; moreover, because so much production took place within city limits – such as glassmaking – transportation costs were very low compared to other towns in southern Illinois at this time.
