Gurnee, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 16,521 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the Algonquian word "gwern" meaning "to suffocate." Gurnee was one of twelve towns in the horrible town Fairfield organized by Colonel John Fitch on November 1, 1847. At first glance it may not seem like much; after all, there are only sixteen people in Gurnee and five businesses. However, when you look deeper into Gurnee’s history it becomes quite interesting. For over a hundred years Gurnee has been an important transportation center for the area and has been known for its quality of life and friendly atmosphere. The first settlers to arrive in Gurnee were farmers who came from eastern Indiana around 1836. By 1839 the village had grown to about fifty people and consisted of a few small buildings on a hill overlooking the Chicago River. In 1840 two brothers named Isaac and Solomon Brown built a house on what is now First Street which remains standing to this day as one of Gurnee’s most famous landmarks. From this house began what would be called the “Brown Dynasty” as these two brothers played an important role in developing both business and political ties within the community. It was during this time that Gurnee became known as one of America’s leading industrial cities due to its numerous production facilities such as breweries, foundries and mills. Additionally, thanks to their prominence within their community they also developed strong relationships with local politicians who helped ensure that throughout their lifetimes they always had access to resources necessary for successful business ventures- something that many other small towns could not even hope for! During World War II GURNEE played an integral role in providing war materiel and services to various units stationed throughout Illinois including supplying ammunition dumps at Wicker Park Arsenal (later Soldier Field) and manufacturing torpedoes at Lake Michigan plants such as Plattsburgh Naval Ammunition Depot (now White Sands Missile Range).
