Gurnee is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 61,569 at the 2010 census. Gurnee is the third-largest city in Illinois and the largest city of Lake County. It lies on the Fox River–a tributary of the Chicago River–and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Gurnee" comes from two sources: one is an Indian term meaning "the place where there are many elms," and another source suggests that Gurnee was first called Hennepin Township because early settlers traveled through this township on their way to trade with other parts of Illinois. On July 1, 1835, a group of men under Captain John Richardson erected a log cabin near what is now the intersection of Kedzie Avenue and Western Road in present-day Gurnee. The first permanent settler in what would become Gurnee was James Brown (1795-1886). He founded a gristmill here on November 9, 1835; it became known as Brown's Mill. In 1837, he married Eliza Jane Hale (1796-1868), who had also been born in Hennepin Township but grew up in Waukegan Heights on Chicago's South Side. They moved to Gurnee together in 1840 and started a small grocery store on Wabash Avenue within sight of their home. Brown eventually became president and CEO of Guaranty Trust Company (later Guaranty National Bank). In 1865, George Armstrong Cope began construction of what would become Northwestern University; he named it after himself,George Armstrong Cope College (now Northwestern University). In 1927-28 architect Daniel Burnham designed Memorial Hall for Northwestern University—the only building constructed by him while working at Northwestern University.—which has since been used as both an athletic arena and instruction hall.—Cope died in 1928 before its completion; however, his wife helped finance its $40 million cost.
