Military gift history in Gurnee, Illinois begins with the town's first military donation in 1875. A group of men from Gurnee donated two rifles and a revolver to the local militia to help defend the town during the civil war. The rifle was used in combat and is still on display at Gurnee's old arsenal. The next military donation occurred in 1903 when a group of soldiers from nearby Peoria donated three rifles and ten revolvers to the local militia. This donation helped to improve morale within the community as well as give residents an opportunity to participate in wartime activity. The weapons were used for target practice and were also stored at Peoria's old arsenal until 1909 when they were donated to Gurnee again. In World War II, Gurnee became one of sixty-six towns that participated in the nation's fight against fascism. The Gurnee-based Army Air Forces Museum is one of the most important military museums in Illinois. It was founded in 1933 and has been housed at the former Wright-Patterson Air Force Base since 1948. The museum has a large collection of aircraft and missiles, as well as uniforms and equipment from both World War I and World War II.
Gurnee, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 53,754 at the 2010 census. Gurnee is the third-largest city in Illinois after Chicago and Springfield. The area now known as Gurnee began as part of the town of Saline on the east side of what is now Chicago Heights. In 1845, George Stephenson built his first locomotive engine in this area; it was used to haul produce from a small farm near present-day Wrigley Field to the market near Dearborn Street and Michigan Avenue. The railroad reached Gurnee in 1853 when it opened up what is today McHenry Road through Saline Township to Addison Avenue and then across Lake Shore Drive to State Street (now Western Ave). From here, goods could be transported direct to markets all over Chicagoland. By 1860, there were about 100 residents in GurnEE; by 1870 it had grown to more than 1,000. In 1876, two men named Jesse Bicknor and Johnnie Ladd decided that they would build their own community on land they had bought northeast of Gurnee along modern day Prairie View Road just south of Mound City Road (now Sheridan Rd.). They called their community "Bicknorville". With only 10 families living there at its peak during its early years – including five members of the Bicknor family – it never became very large or successful. However, because so much development took place around nearby Wrigley Field and Dearborn Street during this time period – something that did not occur until later when those areas became heavily populated – Bicknorville remains one of GURNEE's most colorful memories. On July 4th 1865 — Independence Day — Abraham Lincoln was assassinated outside Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C., setting off an events leading up to America’s Civil War which lasted three years and ended with slavery being abolished nationwide at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865. Many people who lived around Chicago Heights at that time remember seeing Union soldiers marching into town for duty just before sunrise on July 4th 1865 wearing blue uniforms with white stars on them while carrying cannons and other military hardware! Reportedly General Grant helped lead these troops into town while President Abraham Lincoln remained inside Ford’s Theatre watching proceedings from a distance! Early residents were primarily farmers who raised pigs and hogs on their properties or supplemented their income by means such as picking apples or doing odd jobs for local businesses like laundry or post office work etcetera Eventually industry began arriving followed by housing development which created demand for workers among locals as well as employers elsewhere The influx of laborers led to increased business activity especially around Wrigley Field which resulted in many new stores opening up along Dearborn Street As late as 1960 about 60% of all businesses located within 500 feet (150 m) of Wrigley Field were owned by individuals connected with the baseball team ." The first residents of Gurnee were farmers who cultivated corn, beans, potatoes, and other crops. By the 1840s, however, the town had become an important commercial center due to its location on the main road between Chicago and St. Louis. Manufacturing began to develop in Gurnee in the late 19th century thanks to a variety of businesses including carpenters, printers, jewelers, brewers/distilleries, meatpackers/butchers etc. In addition to its economic importance postwar Gurnee also experienced significant political growth thanks to its position as a major node in the Illinois Central Railroad system. This helped make Gurnee one of the most politically active communities in Midwest history; indeed many of its leaders went on to serve in high-level positions within Illinois government during this period. In recent decades much attention has been focused on efforts to redevelop downtown Gurneeweather with mixed success; while retaining some key aspects of its historical character it is increasingly becoming an unaffordable liveable area for affluent visitors instead of an economically vibrant community knit together through commerce and industry
Gurnee was founded in 1854 by two brothers, George and Lewis Gurnee. The Gurnees were the first European settlers in what is now Illinois. They came from England and started a farm on the banks of the Des Plaines River. In 1855, they married Anna Maria Hajielski, who was also from England. The couple had four children: Lewis (1856-1930), George (1858-1943), John (1860-1948) and Julia (1862-1945). In 1861, Lewis bought a tract of land east of Chicago to build his home. He named his home "The Gurneys" after his siblings. In 1865, they moved to a new farm near present day Wabash Avenue and Throop Street in Gurnee. Here they raised horses, cows and pigs until their death in 1930.
