Gurnee was founded in 1838 by John C. Gurnee, a furrier and entrepreneur. The first settler in the town was John W. Larson, who arrived in 1839. In 1865, Gurnee became a city limits when it annexed neighboring Rockford; this move increased its population by over 25%. The 1880s were a time of great change for Gurnee; thanks to advances in transportation technology and other factors, Greater Chicago had become increasingly accessible via railroads and steamships. As a result, businesses began moving away from downtown towards suburban locations throughout much of central Illinois. This trend continued into the early 20th century; however, some businesses did manage to keep their offices within city limits until after World War II."
