Gurnee is a small town in central Illinois that has had a coffee tradition for over 100 years. The first coffee shop opened in Gurnee in 1892, and the town's first café, called The Cafe, was open from 1893 to 1897. In 1907, Gurnee became home to its own coffee roasting company and began exporting its coffee to other towns in Illinois and Wisconsin. By 1912, the town had two grocery stores as well as three cafes. In 1915, Gurnee became home to its first public library. As thetown grew wealthier and more popular with residents and tourists alike, cups of Joe began appearing at local businesses throughout the 1920s. By 1930, Gurnee had six cafes including one belonging to Jughead Jones which still stands today. During World War II, Gurnee was bombed by the Japanese during their invasion of North America; however no damage was done to any buildings or infrastructure. After World War II ended, gourmet coffee continued growing in popularity in Gurnee as people started spending more time outside enjoying fresh-roasted beans straight from the bean source rather than purchasing pre-packaged items from store shelves. In 1957, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Company opened up shop in nearby Lombard; this was followed by other similar shops throughout Illinois over the next few years until 1962 when all of these shops were consolidated under one roof under the name of Peet's Coffee Company (later known as Starbucks). Since then, different coffeeplease companies have opened up shop within Illinois and across America with variations on classic gourmet coffee styles such as valve roast (Robusta), dark roast ( Breakfast Blend), light roast ( Roastmaster), decafinated versions of regular coffees (Peet's Dutch Style Roasts), chamomile tea lattes (Chocolate Cake Latte) and pumpkin spice latte variants including Pumpkin Spice Latte ($10/cup/$2 extra for added pumpkin flavor). The first time it was roasted was in Sumatra in 350 BC by the Persians. The Egyptians began to roast coffee beans in the 4th century BC. Coffee became popularized by Spanish sailors in the 16th century AD when they discovered new markets for their beans on ships sailing around South America and Africa. Dutch sailors started trading with India and Southeast Asia before landing at Java (now Indonesia) in 1511 AD and discovering coffee there. This led to Dutch traders introducing coffee to Europe in the 16th century AD where it quickly grew popular among travelers and merchants alike. The first African slaves were brought over from Africa to work on plantations known as “coffee-houses” near English ports such as London, Bristol, Portsmouth, Liverpool, and Plymouth between 1660-1670; these early plantations yielded high quality beans that soon became desired by Europeans for their signature flavor profile (espresso). Buttons made from ground pieces of this fine bean were sold at bazaars throughout Europe until 1795 whenamping technology replaced hand roasting for mass production; however, small amounts ofthis old-fashioned specialty still remain available today (see below).
