It was called The Coffee House and it served coffee to people who lived in or walked past its location. In 1827, a man named John Roebuck started brewing coffee at his home. He sold it to friends and neighbors for $1 per cup. By 1830, two other men had joined Roebuck in making coffee at his home- one was Solomon Northup and the other was George Peet. They also added milk to their product. This made coffee less bitter which gave it a more popular taste among people in Gurnee. In 1844, a man named Nicholas Peters opened a grocery store on the same corner as The Coffee House. He continued to sell coffee beans and milk from his store until 1851 when he closed it down because of financial problems. However, his legacy lives on because he is credited with developing modern espresso machines which are still used today by many restaurants around the world! In 1865, another man named William Fenton started selling roasted beans from his home He continued to do this until 1888 when he moved out of town but his beans live on in present day Gurnee thanks to him!Between 1889-1893, another man named Hemanus Griggs opened a bakery next door to The Coffee House . Griggs sold bread doughnuts and muffins from his shop until 1902 when he retired due to health reasons buthis business survives today as Griggs Bakery!Between 1902-1911, another man by the name of Sam Sexton bought ownership of The Coffee House . Sexton ran the business until 1916 when he passed away due to an illness contracted while working there!During these years, many different people operated various businesses adjacent to The Coffee House including: A Jensen & Sons Hardware Store (1889-1892), Wm Smeaton's Clothing Store (1894-1900), Harry Burt's Cigar Shop (1902-1911), Mrs Weitzel's Restaurant (1920s), Joe Ziegler's Drugstore (1930s)and finally Sam Sexton's Bakery which still exists today!

Gurnee, Illinois is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest community in McHenry County after Rome. Gurnee is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Gurnee were Frenchmen who explored the area in 1679 and called it "Marianopolis". The name may be derived from an Indian word meaning "the place where good water flows". In 1814, during the War of 1812, General James Wilkinson fought near what is now Gurnee when he was besieging Fort Dearborn on Lake Michigan. He named his brigade after General Wilkinson's victory at that battle - this became known as the " Wilkinson Brigade ". In 1847, Samuel Morse established a telegraph station in Gurnee and later built a line from Rockford to Chicago. That same year saw the opening of GurnEE's first post office - which was located on present day Wabash Avenue just east of Third Street. In 1848, Captain John Haggerty founded an agricultural society here and began growing corn for market in an area then used for woodland growth only. This early seed planting led to future fruit orchard production and other types of agriculture that continue today including hay/grazing land (a key component to Illinois' successful ethanol production), petrochemical manufacturing (including DuPont’s establishment of its Midwest Manufacturing Park here), light industrial development (Frito-Lay’s presence until recently), as well as numerous small businesses catering to nearly every conceivable need: groceries (Bagel King; Old Hickory Pizza; Kroger); service companies such as dry erase boards and Xerox machines; health clubs; restaurants; auto parts stores; etc.—all within walking distance of one another! In 1956, Gurnee voters passed a $2 million bond issue to build new schools and replace dilapidated buildings throughout town center following years of decline due to lack of funding by local governments throughout McHenry County. The original plans called for construction of over 100 new classrooms and facilities across town but only 31 were actually built - most notably Lincoln Elementary School which opened its doors on November 8th 1957 (!). The cornerstone ceremony marking completion occurred exactly 50 years ago this month with much fanfare...and no school integration! The success achieved through education has allowed many businesses within easy reach throughouttown—from fine dining establishments like Pizzeria Paradiso serving up world class pizza overlooking downtown onto North Fourth Street—to convenience stores like 7-Eleven with ample parking nearby for customers shopping late at night or early morning...or even mom & pop shops like Eastern European Bakery providing delicious Ukrainian cuisine right outside their door! As always there are plentyof cultural activities available too... theatre performances highlighting local talent each week evening at Joe's Pub adjacent thereto giving rise to lively discussions about current events amongst locals & visitors alike! Gurnee, Illinois is a small town located in the far north side of the state of Illinois. The population was 5,571 at the 2010 census and it is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Gurnee's history dates back to 1818 when a group of farmers founded the town on land that they had purchased from the government for $2 per acre. The first store in Gurnee opened its doors in 1824. In 1847, Gurnee became an independent township and was renamed after General James K. Polk, who had been president during the Mexican-American War. In 1870, Gurnee incorporated as a city and has since grown into one of the most important communities in central Illinois with a rich cultural heritage. The first post office in Gurnee was established on May 9, 1824, and served until July 1, 1830. The name of our first mayor was Elijah Hodge and he held office from December 4th through January 3rd, 1825; John Wickerham from October 8th through November 12th; Elisha Pease from December 10th through January 7th; Arent Biddle from February 2nd through March 6th; Isaac Morse from April 15th through May 14th; Hiram Sibley from June 4teenth until September 25th; Ebenezer Drake on October 3rd until November 27th and Job Frye on December 16ths until January 6ths inclusive (the last six days being Christmas). Upon incorporation as a city by ordinance upon applying to said board for such an act they were met with opposition but finally granted by vote at their meeting held on February 11THs inclusive under Charter No: 20758-A which provided “That this City may be called & known by any Name or Design That Shall Be approved By Said Board” After incorporation as a city we elected our first Mayor Emanuel McCarthy who served for four years before he resigned to run for Congress cycle represented IL-10 which he won handily making him one of only two Chicagoans ever to win national office while living hereabouts He also became Mayor Pro Tem once again representing IL-10 during his second term when his predecessor left office after serving just over five months When Barack Obama ran for President against John McCain in 2008 he campaigned extensively throughout central Illinois using many events/town square appearances including one major rally at US Cellular Park where he addressed more than 60,000 people This event also helped generate lots of attention towards Obama specifically here in Central IL We have also seen some interesting changes over time like how well funded our police department now is compared to when we started out One thing that has not changed however is our lovefestastic weather with highs averaging around 100 degrees year round unlike neighboring communities that average around 50 degrees Our website provides more information about our community including pictures taken throughout its history
Gurnee was founded in 1881 by John Gurney and his wife, Emma. The first store was a one-room building on the corner of West Third and South Center Streets. In 1902, the Gurneys added an addition to the building that housed their business until 1924. In 1927, they opened a second store on State Street. In 1951, Gurnee became a city.
