Gurnee, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 61,619 at the 2010 census. Gurnee is the third most populous city in Illinois after Chicago and Springfield. It borders the municipalities of Downers Grove to the north and Westchester to the east. The name "Gurnee" may be derived from Old English meaning "a steep wooded hill or mountain". Gurnee was first settled by pioneer farmers who arrived in 1836. By 1860, Gurnee had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1871, the town was renamed for General George Washington Custer after he died during an engagement at Little Big Horn. During World War II, Gurnee served as one of two U.S.-controlled airfields in central Illinois responsible for providing military planes with fuel and supplies for Allied forces fighting in Europe. In 2001, Gurnee became home to Apple Inc.'s new headquarters Campus 2 which replaced their old campus on Quarry Road near Wacker Drive. The original building bounded by Clark Street to the west; Wacker Drive to the east; State Street to the south; and Quarry Road to the north were demolished and replaced with a new campus that looms large across busy North Side streetscape today while still housing some office space used by Apple Inc.. As part of this project Apple also built a second store on Dearborn Street adjacent to their current Loop store which opened in late 2009/early 2010
When the United States entered World War I in April 1917, it was a small but rapidly growing country with only about 26,000 soldiers. As the war unfolded and America's resources dwindled, so too did its military. By late 1918, there were only 10,000 men in the Army Corps of Engineers; by early 1919, that number had shrunk to 3,500. The war left America with gaping wounds in its military system which would take many years to heal. One of the most significant wounds was the loss of cavalry units such as the 1st Cavalry Division which had played an important role in routing German forces at Verdun in 1916. The 1st Cav was replaced by infantry units and eventually disbanded after the war.
