Grayslake is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 596 at the 2010 census. It is located near Grayslake Heights and Grayslake Village. The town of Grayslake was founded in 1847 by Captain George Haggerty and his family as a post office on the site of what is now the village of Grayslake Heights. The first postmaster, Capt. John Geddes, served from 1847 to 1850. In 1851, Rev. James Kirtland built a log cabin on a hill near present-day forest Road 21 and Indianola Avenue for himself and his family; this became the first permanent structure in Grayslake Township. The early years of Grays Lake were difficult because there were few resources available for farming; however, with the opening of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in 1865, farming became more widespread and easier than it had ever been before. From 1870 to 1890,Grays Lake saw rapid growth due to waves of newcomers coming to work on railroad construction projects throughout Kane County – many of whom settled permanently in GraysLake after their completion or during its brief boom period. During World War I (1914–18),GraysLake played an important role as a military training ground for local troops; notable residents include Rear Admiral Harry S Truman (presidential candidate 1944) and First Lieutenant Lloyd Bentsen (vice president 1988). Today much of what once constituted the extensive parade grounds around Navy Pier have been redeveloped into residential neighborhoods such as North Park East and South Park West overlooking downtown Chicago; while some parts remain largely unchanged since World War II including portions of MacArthur Boulevard which run through town center flanked by large warehouses used by Ford Motor Company until they moved out in the 1970s

Grayslake is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Grayslake were French traders and fur-trappers who came in search of new routes to Asia. In 1795, Colonel George Washington's troops camped on what is now Grayslake Boulevard for three days while they built Fort Dearborn near present day Elmhurst Hospital. A treaty was signed that year by General John Adams and Captain Pierre Lacrosse (a French Canadian) with the local Potawatomi people which exempted them from American Indian hostilities. The first school in Grayslake was built in 1812 by Paleo-Indians led by Chief Sachem Kanabezuwahkiyuk. The first teacher was Dr. Nathaniel Jarvis Roening and he taught agriculture until 1829 when he became superintendent of schools under Governor William Bogan. In 1834, the village trustees hired Amos Furman as their first school superintendent; he served until 1840 when he became Superintendent of Schools for Kane County In 1846, Grayslake incorporated as a Village; it had a population of about 100 residents and two stores located on First Avenue and Superior Street. That same year saw the opening of Grayslake Creek Dam which provided water for irrigation purposes and power generation until 1978 when it closed due to vandalism It wasn't until 1896 that grayslake obtained its name from then-Governor James Kapp (1863-1896). He named it after Major General David Gray's plantation at Jacksonville Landing on Lake Michigan – an event that occurred during his time as governor Gray had purchased 4500 acres (1 km2) east of Grays Lakeside Resort where graysonville now stands - becoming one of Illinois' largest landholders Gray also donated $5000 for the establishment of a public library in 1895 which still operates today across First Avenue from his old home
