The history of the Grayslake National Guard is extensive, dating back to 1859 when two companies of infantry were organized at Grayslake. The first unit was called the “First Regiment of Illinois Infantry” and served in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1865, the regiment was redesignated as the 1st Battalion, Illinois Volunteer Infantry and continued serving in the Union army until 1898. In 1903, Congress passed an act authorizing establishment of a national guard in each state. The Illinois National Guard was authorized to consist of three battalions and it became known as the Grayslake National Guard. On July 1, 1909, all three battalionsof Grayslake National Guard were merged into a single organization under command of Maj.-Gen. John J. Pershing and became known as Headquarters Battery, 2nd Infantry Regiment (Illinois National Guards) stationed at Grayslake Barracks. Throughout World War I and World War II, Headquarters Battery 2nd Infantry Regiment (Illinois National Guards) participated in numerous military campaigns including doughboy raids into Germany; chemical warfare missions over Europe; amphibious assaults on Guam; air support for ground troops against Japanese forces; and liberation operations in Sicily and Italy. After World War II ended, Headquarters Battery 2nd Infantry Regiment (Illinois National Guards) redeployed to Fort Riley Kansas where it remained until being disbanded on August 14th 1980 by order of then-President Jimmy Carter.

The Grayslake National Guard was activated on Dec. 16, 1922. The unit was organized out of the First Illinois Infantry Regiment and served in World War I and World War II.
Grayslake is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 32,533 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth largest city in Illinois. Grayslake sits on the banks of the Calumet River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa). The first Europeans to visit Grayslake were French missionaries in 1679. They named it La Salle after Jean-Baptiste de la Salle, who had explored America from Quebec City in 1534–35. A post office called Grayslake was established in 1836, and became a town in 1856. The current name of the city may be traced back to an offer by General James K. Polk to rename Chicago after President Andrew Johnson if he were elected president that year. In 1868, John Davenport donated land for a new courthouse and town square which are now part of downtown Grayslake. Davenport also donated land for two colleges: one for Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU carbondale) and one for Union College (UNC). SIU carbondale was founded asSienna College in 1870; UNC was founded asthe University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1795 under charter from King George III of Great Britain. In 1906, SIU carbondale became Davenport State Teachers College; UNCbecame Elizabethan School of Law on May 1, 1907 when its predecessor Riverside Polytechnic Institute merged with Durham School of Law at Duke University Citation: "Grayslake's rich history can be seen throughout its community – both old buildings and newer additions dot the downtown area." In 1925, Grayslake joined with other towns along the Calumet River valley to form what would become known as Metropolitan Chicago (). That same year saw the opening of Northwestern Memorial Hospital (), which remains today one of metropolitan Chicago’s most ardent healthcare providers providing care to residents across all nineteen counties served by Northwestern Memorial Hospital (). The following year saw another hospital opened – Northwestern Memorial Hospital Center () which provides comprehensive health services including maternity care and pediatric care through affiliations with eight local hospitals - making it one of metropolitan Chicago’s largest healthcare providers outside those found within Northwestern Memorial Hospital (). In 1957 Hennepin County absorbed portions of Cook County into its boundaries making Grays Lake once again within county limits but giving it more autonomy over its own affairs such as school districtgovt structure On July 1st 1970 Union Township incorporated while Kenilworth Township did not follow suit until October 10th 1970 due to lack of support from north side Residents Presentation: "After much discussion between township officials and union representatives about creating governance structures separate from those controls exercised by northwest municipalities there still wasn't consensus before commissioners voted 3-2 against incorporation" This shows how divided north side Residents were about having their own government despite overwhelming support amongst township officials

Grayslake is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 15,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Grayslake were farmers and their families who arrived in the 1840s from England. At that time, there was only one road leading to Grayslake from Chicago and most people traveled by boat or train. By 1851, Grayslake had a post office and two stores. In 1854, the railroad reached Grayslake and it became an important stop on the line. The town developed rapidly after that and by 1870 it had twelve businesses including three banks and two churches. In 1876, GraysLake saw its first tornado when a severe storm dumped several feet of snow on the town center killing four people and injuring twenty-two others. In 1916, Grayslake became home to America's first air raid warning system during World War I when Lieutenant Colonel John Ralston installed a warns station on top of an old cotton gin near the current high school building. That same year also saw the opening of America's first movie theater which was called "The Majestic" (later renamed "The Regency"). The local paper at that time said "the new cinema has given us something to look forward to each week". Over time many other businesses have opened up in Grayslake including restaurants, grocery stores, hair salons and more; giving it a diverse range of services which make it an attractive place to live, work or visit. Today, Grayslake is known for its beautiful landscape - full of rolling hills and pristine lakes - as well as its strong commercial community which provides jobs for residents AND support services for local businesses throughout the summer months!
Grayslake was founded by Levi Strauss in 1847. The town was originally called "Niles," but it became Grayslake after the first post office opened there in 1851. The Strauss family ran a grocery store and later a clothing factory until their death in 1928. The town prospered during the Great Depression, thanks to its small-town atmosphere and strong job market. However, Grayslake's prosperity ended during the 1980s as technological advances made it more difficult for small businesses to survive.
