Grayslake is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 33,912 at the 2010 census. Grayslake is located on the western edge of Chicago, and it forms part of the city's north side. It is bordered by the communities of Lakeview to the west, Niles Township to the north, Glen Ellyn to the east and south, and Stickney to the southeast. Grayslake was laid out in 1847 by George H. Griggs as a township for farmers in what was then part ofthe Northwest Territory (now DuPage County). The name derived from "gray" (a type of wheat) because most early settlers were from northeast England. The first post office in Grayslake was established in 1853; it was renamed Maywood in 1862 after General John Fenton Maywood who had helped organize Illinois forces during the American Civil War. The population reached its peak in 1920 with 34,740 residents; however, this number decreased rapidly after World War II due to various factors including suburban development and economic decline within Cook County overall. In 2007-2008 Grayslake experienced an online petition drive that resulted in more than 1 million signatures opposing a planned $10 million renovation project for local high school which would have eliminated all bus service between Grayslake High School and other nearby schools; this campaign led to public outcry and ultimately led to revisions which increased bus service while preserving walkability within each school district.. The current incarnation of Grayslake began as a small village called Oak Park (later renamed North Aurora) on Woodlawn Avenue off Cicero Avenue about one mile west of where present day Grayslake High School stands on State Road 59E. First settled by Germans near Freeport Arsenal Ammunition Plant during World War I they named their community after Captain Augustus Gray Morgan who served with distinction as Commander-in-Chief Military Forces Europe at Salerno beachhead from 1915 until his death later that year according to Ulysses S Grant’s memoir “From Cairo To Paris” . The first post office opened at Oak Park on October 10th 1919 under mail order from Minnesota via Driscoll & Hennepin Lakeside Railway Company . German immigrants built retail stores along Cicero Ave following purchase of land adjacent thereto by Mr Geo Pohlmann sr., owner/operator ol Chicago Eastern Railroad depot lot purchased Apr 1916 Capt Gray Morgan donated money necessary for platting new town site calling it 'Oak Park' prior donation included 2 lots per block so blocks became 20 lots total ....... grayson park map
