Granite City, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois. The population was estimated at 95,819 as of the 2010 census. Granite City is located on the north side of Chicago and is bordered by the cities of Evanston to the east, Oak Forest to the north, Downers Grove to the west, and Westmont to the south. The city proper covers only a small area of land bordering two other municipalities: single-street downers Grove to its east and northwest and two-street Glen Ellyn to its southwest. The first settlers in what is now Granite City were Swedish immigrants who arrived in 1847. By 1860, there were over 100 Swedes living in Granite City. In 1870, Granite City became part of Cook County when it was organized out of parts of Keokuk and Rockford counties. As Chicago grew into an industrialized city during the late 19th century, many Germans moved into what is now Granite City from surrounding villages or towns because they could not find work in larger cities such as Chicago or Detroit. Many German-owned businesses operated within graniteware production until World War II when prohibition made it difficult for them to continue doing so without being taxed heavily by U.S. authorities; this led some German-owned businesses—such as those run by Gustav Klimt—to merge with American companies during that time period due to their greater success outside America than inside America (Foster & Hirschstadt). In response to increasing joblessness among German Americans during World War II and postwar years following repeal of Prohibition nationwide, many local businessmen founded mutual funds which invested in stocks both domestically and abroad (Heinrichs Bros.). This business model allowed these businessmen more control over their investments while still enjoying lower investment risks than did individual investors who risked their entire portfolios on each purchase (Merrill Lynch). As mutual fund ownership increased throughout most American society during postwar decades—a trend paralleled by deposits at banks totaling $2 trillion by 1978—the opportunities for individuals within these industries declined relative to those available through individual enterprise (Dillon & Wickerham). In 1951–1952 Glenda Heineman served as president pro tempore of Cook County Board No 9; she had been elected vice president four years earlier after serving two terms as state representative from Rockford Township (now Kane County). She was also active with various organizations including Women’s Institute club which met monthly at home while her husband worked long hours at his company; he later became general manager/owner with Glenda Heineman Insurance Company [now Allstate] before retiring in 1984 aged 80 years old [see photo]. In 1957 she married Homer Atherton who served two terms on Cook County Board No 9 between 1953 and 1961 then won election as mayoralty candidate for Cook County – becoming one term away from becoming speaker pro tempore upon his victory in 1961 but he died before taking office that year [see photo]).
