The National Guard of Granite City, Illinois, was organized on May 6, 1917. The unit was the first in the United States to be activated for war purposes. It sided with America during World War I and saw action in France and Belgium. Following the war, the National Guard was disbanded but its traditions continued. On November 10, 1946, Granite City's Mayor Hinchman announced that the city would join the United States Military Academy at West Point as a cadet town. In 1951, Granite City became one of ninety towns (and cities) in Illinois to become a national guard training center under President Harry S Truman. The college-town atmosphere of Granite City attracted students from all over America and Europe. From 1951 until 1990, West Pointgraduates formed part of the granitelike town's military leadership structure. In 1990, when units from several other states were reactivated and assigned to NATO missions in Bosnia and Kosovo, Granite City reverted back to civilian control with an Armed Forces Reserve Command detachment called "Granitelike Guards". As part of this detachment responsibility includes providing security for local businesses and residents during military exercises or deployments by our nation's largest employer: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers...The Guard mission has evolved over time into more than just ceremonial turnout; it is now an important component of community defense." Granite City, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 21,539 at the 2010 census, making it the fifth-largest city in Illinois and the largest in Kane County. It is also one of two cities in Cook County (the other being Chicago), which is bordered by Lake Michigan to the south and west and by Racine to the north. The city's location on a bend in the river Kankakee River gives it an elongated form that distinguishes it from most other large U.S. cities, such as Chicago or Detroit. The first Europeans to visit Granite City were French missionaries who built a trading post there in 1816. In 1834, Granite City became part of what was then called Mexican Territory; when Mexico lost its independence from Spain that year, Granite City reverted to American control and became part of what is now Kane County. After World War II, much ofgranitepurpose moved out as industries shifted away from manufacturing towards services such as healthcare and education; however, graniteproduction remains important with several quarries still active today including those used for building Stone Temple Pilots' frontman Marshall Bruce Lee's home (the carpenters actually used granite for his home). Today Granite City has many cultural attractions such as art galleries and theaters downtown along with restaurants and bars that serve up traditional American cuisine like steak Diane or buffalo chicken dip sandwiches made with blue cheese dressing instead of mayo or ketchup. Additionally, there are many festivals throughout the year honoring various aspects of local history like Kipling Days where events include readings from Rudyard Kipling's works while strolling down Main Street; Historic Preservation Month where events take place around town highlighting historic buildings preserving their former glory; Pioneer Days where families come out to enjoy activities like corn dogs or go fishing at one of several lakes within easy walking distance; etc.; attracting people from all over Northern Illinois who come experience some unique local flavor not found anywhere else!
There is a long and proud history of the National Guard, both in the United States and around the world. The Guard has played an essential role in many aspects of American culture, from protest movements to peacekeeping missions. Today, the Guard enjoys a strong presence across the country, and its members play an important role in communities all over America. The National Guard was created on September 8th, 1792 when President George Washington issued a proclamation calling for all able-bodied men to rise up against “the numerous insurrections” taking place throughout Europe. The Guard quickly proved its worth by providing security at key moments during the Revolutionary War. In 1796, Congress passed a bill that allowed soldiers called up for militia duty to receive education and training instead of just being given military pay. This law also helped increase morale among troops and help them prepare for war. After the Revolution, Congress began considering how best to provide for Militia needs. One option was to create a national guard corps like those existing in other countries. However, this proposal met with resistance from some lawmakers who felt that such a large organization would be too costly and difficult to manage. Finally, on July 26th, 1800, Congress approved the establishment of three separate volunteer units: one made up of Regulars (soldiers who had been drafted into service), one made up of Pensioners (those who had retired from active service), and another made up of volunteers (people not already contracted by their unit). These new units were known as Regiments de Lafayette et d’Aurioles (Lafayette Regiment and Aurioles Regiment). The first national guard battle occurred on October 14th 1802 when 1st Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry attacked Fort Ticonderoga near New York City. The fight resulted in a close victory for the Americans but demonstrated once again how well organized and well-equipped the Guards were compared to their European counterparts. By 1804, there were 11 different regiments operating within America’s National Army under General James Wilkinson III command alone! With such an impressive force at his disposal, Wilkinson decided it was time for him to take his army down south into Mexico City where he hoped to oust Maximiliano Hidalgo from power! Unfortunately for Wilkinson – or maybe fortunately – Maximiliano had other plans! A bloody battle ensued which left more than 50 Americans dead (plus over 60 British casualties) whileMaximiliano emerged triumphant victorious….but without any boots on Mexican soil! Granite City, Illinois was founded in 1847 by Lewis Cass and James K. Polk as the site of a new town to be built on the lands of the original Chicago village of Kane. The village boundaries were redrawn in 1871, and Granite City became a part of Chicago. It was designated a national Historic Landmark in 1976. The city is located near the Cahokia Mounds National Monument, which are one of the largest complex earthworks in North America and date back to about 1000 BC. The mounds include evidence for three major cultures—the Mississippian culture (ca. AD 1200-1400), the Potawatomi (ca. AD 1500-1850), and the Oskaloosa Creek peoples (ca. AD 1800-1900)—and their associated architectural styles including the Hennepin County Courthouse and other structures dating from around 1400 AD onward. In 1847, when Lewis Cass first proposed that Granite City be established as a new town on land acquired from Native Americans north of Chicago, he based his proposal on his observations that agents had been sent out to collect taxes from Indian residents withinChicago's limits but had not returned with any results since they were believed to have fled or been destroyed by local Indians during warring periods some years earlier. In addition, he observed that there was large amount of coal available within easy reach for businessmen interested in developing this potential commerce center east of Chicago because transportation costs then were very expensive for goods transported overland from distant markets such as Cincinnati or St Louis via rivers such as Missouri or Ohio instead of being transported through arduous wagon journeys over long distances across open country
Granite City was a small town in the eastern part of Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1871 by granite quarry owners William and Samuel Granite. The town served as the capital of Illinois from 1875 to 1879 and then again from 1889 to 1893. The Granite City post office closed on July 15, 1974.
