Granite City became an incorporated municipality on January 1st, 1909 via an act of the General Assembly. It became a city after being annexed by Park Ridge on December 9th, 1925 through an act of the State Legislature. On October 24th, 1932 Mayor James Kilduff announced his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor against incumbent Joseph McCarthy but lost to him handily with 53% of the vote to McCarthy's 37%. On November 5th 1932 Mayor Kilduff announced his candidacy for President of America under then-new Constitution Party Candidate Franklin D Roosevelt but lost to Republican nominee Henry Wallace with 54% of the vote to Wallace's 46%. After World War II ended in 1945 local manufacturing declined because so many people had left for good due to wartime production shortages and World War II sanctions against Germany; however new technology led to resurgence in graniteware manufacture starting with sales growth during 2002 recession marked by increased economic stress throughout much OFW WIUELAND area). In 1990s lumber mills closed down due to overcutting/labor disputes among sawmills; however new mill openings have occurred such as one opened up near downtown GraniteCity just east over I-55 from Regal Cinemas (which employed 350 workers before it went out of business) and another opened up next door at Carbondale Mills mall which employed 100 workers before it closed down too because its ownership changed hands 6 times between 1997 and 2003 resulting mainly from investment banker Carl Icahn buying large parts thereof).
