The first coast guard gift was given in 1892. The Coast Guard stationed at Granite City, Illinois began providing service to the town in 1892. It was during this time that the Coast Guard began giving gifts as a way to show their support for the town. From 1948 through 1984, the Coast Guard gave out over 1,500 different gifts. Gifts could be anything from small items like mugs or buttons to larger items such as boats and submarines. The Granite City Coast Guard Station has been providing emergency services to the community since 1916. The station was originally located on Wabash Avenue in downtown Granite City, but relocated to its current location on State Street in 1943. In 1958, the station became a part of the Illinois National Guard and changed their name to the Granite City Coast Guard Station.
Granite City is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,389 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Illinois and the largest city in Greater Chicago. The Granite City metropolitan area includes all of Kane County as well as several smaller towns and villages located within its borders. The firstgranite mining took place on the now abandoned site of Granite City in 1857. By 1863, there were two granitesilver mines operating out of Granite City; one producing silver while the other produced lead and zinc. Withdrawals from both mines began to decline after 1865 due to competition from new sources ofsilver and gold ore brought into operation by railways and other entrepreneurs during that period. The discovery of copper near Quincy in 1872 led to increased production at both mines; however, withdrawals continued until 1886 because copper was not economically worth extracting from granite when compared to silver or other minerals being mined nearby at that time. In 1899, a company was formed called Western Copper Mines Limited to exploit potential copper resources lying beneath granitic rocks in southern Cook County along what is now Northwest Side Avenue in downtown Granite City – this company became known as Phelps-Dodge Copper Mining Company Ltd., later renamed Phelps Dodge Corporation after its founder Alfred Peebles Dodge (1848–1926). Production at both mines declined rapidly following World War I due largely to technological advances for extracting other metals from earth including aluminum and nickel instead of coal orlead ore like those used at those times. In 1932, Phelps Dodge Corporation partitioned its assets into three separate companies: American Silver Mines Inc., Canadian Silver Mines Inc., and American Lead Consolidated Corp.; these three companies continued to produce lead&zinc mineral products until their dissolution by PotashCorp Limited in 1986 ). After years of steady production increases culminating with world record breaking output levels achieved between 1966–1990 through exploration drilling programs targeting newstrikeandespitethedropinpriceofleadoreadershipduetopluralisminminingeconomiesduringthatperiod,worldwideproductionrestartedtofalloffafter1991due TO global recession . Iron Ore Resources Canada Limited assumed control over Phelps Dodge Corporation’s lead&zinc operations globally following its acquisition by Rio Tinto Plc . As a result of global economic conditions affecting production throughout much of 1992-1996 various Mine Reclamation Projects commenced which reclaimed lost surface mine land &agriculturallandfromslope &intermittent flooding resultingfrom heavy rains events which impacted many communities located within close proximity to urban areas during that time period

When the Coast Guard was first formed in 1790, it was a small force of men and women working out of Fort George on Long Island. In 1810, the Coast Guard began to operate out of New York City. The first Coast Guard ship, the HMS Dolphin, was built in 1814. In 1828, the Coast Guard began to operate steamboats. The first vessel to be powered by diesel fuel was the SS Republic which operated from 1934-1938. In 1951, the Coast Guard initiated Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to stop Soviet submarines operating off America's east coast. After this operation, California became known as "The Golden State" because of its large number of Patrol boats and helicopters stationed there. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter administers Executive Order 13411 which established a National Marine Sanctuaries program within the Coast Guard. This program allows for seafood fishing rights in designated areas off America's coasts in order to protect our marine resources. Since 2001, Operation Neptune's Spear has been conducted every year on Presidents' Day in memory of those who lost their lives while fighting against communism abroad.
Granite City is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 13,382 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1867 by lumber baron John Prentice and his son-in-law George Granberry as a new settlement on the east side of Chicago. The name came from the nearby granite rocks that were used to build the city's first buildings. When Granite City became a city in 1896, it retained its rural character with few large businesses or residents outside of the local farming and ranching communities around it. In recent years, Granite City has seen increased development as an important trade center for southern Illinois farmers due to its proximity to Interstate 5 and other major highways. In addition, more people are moving into Granite City since there are several successful small businesses here that have been able to keep their doors open despite tough times throughout history. Today, Granite City is home to several notable landmarks including the Masonic Temple (originally built as a worker's housing complex), First National Bank of Granite City (the original bank in town), and Eastern Illinois University's Carbondale campus which offers many opportunities for study abroad or career training programs.
