Granite City, Illinois is a small city located in the northwestern corner of the state of Illinois. The population was 7,839 at the 2010 census. The Granite City Artisan Coffee Festival is one of the largest and most popular arts and culture events in Granite City. The event features local artists selling their work onsite as well as coffee from many different roasters. The first coffee shop in Granite City was opened by two veterans of World War I, who started a small grocery store to sell bread and other snacks to soldiers on base. In 1924, Harry J. Beeson opened his first café called “The Dutchman’s Café” which served richly brewed coffee from local roasters like Peet’s Coffee Company and Holland Brewing Company. Beeson was also an important figure in early espresso history, starting up the first espresso machine in Granite City in 1927. In 1951, Donny & Marie Schultz founded their own coffee house named “Donny’s Coffee Shop” which became one of the most popular spots for locals to gather before or after church services or during lunchtime. Over time, Donny & Marie Schultz began importing more exotic beans from all over the world into their shop and started serving them roasted fresh daily at their restaurant next door (now known as THE DONNY&MARY SHOP). By 1975, Donny & Marie Schultz had begun exporting their coffee from their restaurant all over North America including Canada and Mexico. Their business grew even more when they opened a second location near downtown Granite City – now known as THE DONNY&MARY SHOP II – which became home to some of graniteness' earliest Starbucks cafes back when that chain only serviced townspeople across Illinois! A highlight of any visit to Donny & Marie Schultz's cafe should definitely be their famous donuts - whether it's an Early Bird with Assorted Meringue Centers or an Old Fashioned with Caramel Sauce - but anyone who visits any given day can enjoy whatever type of coffee they happen to be ordering!

Granite City, Illinois is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Granite City business district includes most of downtown and parts of the northwest Side of the city. The first people to live in Granite City were pioneers who moved there from Iowa in 1847. The town was chartered on November 3, 1856 by commissioners from Peoria and Decatur counties. On December 16, 1861, Granite City became a full-fledged village when it joined the Du Page County Union School District. In 1924 it became a city when it merged with other smaller towns in Cook County; its original boundaries extended just north of State Street to the river's edge on the northwest side of Chicago. In 1974, Mayor Edward Joffe imposed order after an outbreak of violence that followed his inauguration as mayor following general election results that showed him losing to incumbent Richard Mauer by more than 20 percentage points (62% to 38%). Joffe ordered all law enforcement officers off duty and into their homes until further notice and called for an investigation into what had happened; during his tenure as mayor there were no murders or serious crimes committed outside the legal limits set for each precinct by ordinance dating back To 1887 when citizens were required to keep up with changing police regulations set forth by then Sheriff John Ahern). The origins story begins with James Fenton who came overland from Pennsylvania in 1846 and built Fort Dearborn near present day Westwood Village on land which he granted to his brother David Fenton in 1850. When David died without issue in 1852 James took over construction of Fort Dearborn which also included land grant for what would become Granite City located near where US Highway 55 now intersects I-88/I-94 today known as "Fenton Road". James Fenton left behind two sons: Stephen (1854-1922)who operated a sawmill along current State Street & founded three other businesses including lumberyard & flour mill within minutes of one another – this made possible because prior to prohibition any goods bought or sold above $2 worth could be confiscated & carried away criminalized if caught; Stephen also donated land east of current State Street adjacent to Wabash College now known as Northwestern University for future development into what is nowknown as "Old American Shopping Center" between Second Avenue South & Third Avenue North today's Agnew Plaza shopping center - this addition allowed Douglas Furniture Company founder George Cushing room enough elbowroom within walking distance while still having everything they needed plus access to physical labor pools thereby sparing them altogether much lateriagrapplication common elsewhere? An account written circa 1860describes early residents: “There are some families here [ingranitecity] that have been living here since before we had our school system’a long time ago” evidently referring back tc 1850 when settlers arrived
