Godfrey, Illinois is a small town located in Sangamon County, Illinois. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Godfrey is named after Godfrey Dowling, an early settler in the area. The first post office was established in 1857 and was called Godfreyville. In 1871, the name changed to Godfrey and remained that way until it was changed to Sangamon County in 1971. The community has a history dating back to the 1830s when General James Wilkinson settled hereabouts with his family. Mr. Wilkinson's son-in-law built what is now known as the Old Methodist Church on this site in 1834. He also engaged in farming and stock raising before he moved westward into this country and became one of the earliest merchants and land speculators of his time in Sangamon County." Godfrey was a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1852 by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and his family. The name is German for "Gods help". The town became a railroad town in the early 1900s. Godfrey had one of the first post office buildings in McLean County. The first president of the Central Illinois Railroad was born here. In 1916, Godfrey celebrated its centennial with a special celebration which included speeches by Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1948, Godfrey joined the Quad Cities Interstate Railroad as a station stop on their route from Terre Haute to Edwardsville. Godfrey's last passenger train departed from the station on October 12th, 1950.
Godfrey was founded in 1853 by the brothers Godfrey and Alfred Godfrey. The first store was a small, two-story building on the corner of Main and Douglas Streets. In 1871, the family moved to a larger facility on State Street. In 1923, they built their current facility, which is a four-story brick building with an attached garage.
