Godfrey is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Godfrey was founded in 1837 by John Godfrey and his wife Sarah. The first post office was established in 1839. Godfrey was incorporated as a village in 1875. The name comes from Isaiah 41:10 which reads "The land that I give to thee, it shall be called Godfrey." In 1916 the village had a population of 2,027 and became an unincorporated community within Sangamon County. In 1927 the state of Illinois created a new county named Sangamon for all of Sangamon County including Godfrey and other villages therein; this new county would later be renamed Cook County after Ulysses S. Grant's presidency. On March 7, 1930, local officials announced that they would accept incorporation into Cook County if their residents desired it so; this event marked the beginning of what has been known as "the incorporation movement" in America where towns and villages have sought to become part of larger communities over time (Goudreau-Lamberti 2006). In 1961 the Village Council voted to change its name from Godfrey to Gardiner because there were already two other municipalities with similar namesakes (Gardiner Heights and Park Ridge). In 1976 Gardner merged with neighbouring Park Ridge to form one large municipality with a population exceeding 1,000 people. On October 14th 2018 due to low voter turnout all wards except ward 5 passed by majority vote but due diligence found irregularities during voting process resultant in no Ward being elected chairperson
