Maga coffee began as a small family-owned business in Godfrey, Illinois in the early 1920s. The first Maga coffee beans were roasted and ground by their father, John Maga. In the 1940s, John’s son, Harry, took over the business and continued to roast and grind Maga coffeebeans until his death in 2006. Harry’s wife Alice was also a significant figure in the company through her roles as president of First National Bank of Godfrey and treasurer of the planting committee for the Great Lakes region. Today, grandson Nicholas Maga runs the company with his wife Rebecca.
Godfrey is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Godfrey was settled in 1853 by German immigrants who named it Godfrei after their Gottfried farmstead east of town and north of the Sangamon River. A post office was established here in 1854, and the first store opened in 1865. The name changed to Godfrey in 1876 when a group of farmers petitioned for it to be changed because they felt their native village had been taken away from them by the new arrivals from Indiana. At that time, Godfrey consisted of just a few houses and a few ponds on what is now Main Street. In 1907, work began on building an express train depot here which became operational in 1913. The community grew rapidly during World War II as many residents put up with hard times to help support military efforts overseas; when war ended, most businesses closed but some continued operations until the early 1960s when aluminum smelting began nearby and forced the closure of several local businesses including Godfrey's largest employer (the old Jenssen steel plant). The last resident died in 1984; since then much has changed with suburban sprawl beginning to encroach upon what were once rural settings; however, there are still three churches (oneMethodist and two Roman Catholic) located within walking distance of each other as well as one convenience store and four restaurants serving primarily food items such as pizza or burgers etc.. It is possible that this appellation referred to the ground beans roasted for ceremonial use, such as during religious ceremonies or war feasts. However, it is more likely that the term was derived from the Arabic word al-magha (“coffee”), which means “to break open” or “to debilitate”. By 16th century, Portuguese traders had started trading with India and were familiar with Indian drink recipes, so they likely introduced this type of coffee to Java. Interestingly enough, at some point between 1600 and 1700 Dutch traders also became involved in trade with India and began importing Indonesian coffee beans – thus introducing java drinking culture to Indonesia! The first European settlers in Java noticed that there was a large quantity of Indian-roasted coffee beans on hand and decided to start using them instead of Arabica beans for their own espresso machine purposes. In 1795 Governor General James Cook sailed through Java on his ill-fated First Fleet and captured several tons of Indonesian goods including spices and coffee – thus proving definitively that javanese Indians had been exporting coffees since at least the 15th century! However, until 1815 Indonesians still didn’t know how to make espresso properly so most Indonesians preferred to drink black tea instead! Incidentally, while Europeans were responsible for introducing espresso machines into Jakarta in 1795, javanese natives continued brewng their own cafés until 1820 when Dutch colonialists took over completely! Maga Coffee entered full swing after 1800 though it wasn't until 1840s when American Commodore John Hawkins visited Indonesia that he discovered what all the fuss was about….Hawkins called maga "the best kind" because "it contains all good qualities: its flavor has firmness; its cupidity does not prevail; its body is light; its color deepens slowly." After tasting Hawkin's maga blend he ordered 5 tins each from Europe just like Admiral David Dixon Peary did back home!! And let us not forget Professor Harry Johnson who popularized american style moka potazes during World War II !!!

Godfrey was a small town in Union County, Illinois, United States. The population was 753 at the 2000 census. Godfrey is now part of the city of West Des Moines, Iowa. It first came into being in 1852 when three men named Godfrey purchased 640 acres (253 ha) of land near what is now Interstate 90 and built a log cabin on the site. The town name was derived from this initial investment. In 1857, John Prentice bought an additional 636 acres (248 ha) and formed a partnership with Edward Hickey to develop the area into a town named Godfrey after themselves. In 1865, they sold more land to other investors and by 1870 there were over 100 residents living in Godfrey. In 1916 the post office was established at Godfrey and it continued to be used until it closed in 1976. The first school in Godfrey opened on May 12, 1852 as "Hickory School." It became "Godfrey Academy" in 1861 and then "Godfrey Normal School" from 1865-1916 before becoming known as "West Des Moines Junior/Senior High School." When World War I began, many students left for military service but some returned home to continue their education; therefore, there were only 8 students enrolled at GODFREY JUNIOR/SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL when war ended on November 11th 1918. On December 1st 1918 the school reopened with 179 students grades 6-12 after being closed for 3 months due to lack of funds duringWWI! GODFREY SENIOR/Junior HIGH SCHOOL reopened on October 15th 1919 following renovations that cost $3,000! The current building which houses parts of WDMHS first opened its doors on September 16th 1951 as part of a larger renovation project that included new classrooms, administration offices and two football fields!
