Godfrey, Illinois was founded on May 15, 1816 by Isaac Newton Godfrey and his wife, Chloe. The town was named after Godfrey's ancestor who had settled in the area in 1795. At first, the small community consisted of a few homes and two teachers. In 1827, when Godfrey organized what is now the city of Springfield, he donated land to make room for a school. That same year, he also donated $5,000 to help build the first courthouse in what is now Springfield. Godfrey's business career began early and he soon became one of the most successful farmers in the area. He operated a grocery store and a farm until his death in 1893. After his death, his widow continued running the business until her own death in 1916. She has been buried at Park Cemetery in Springfield since her husband's death. In 1948, when Springfield was merged with other cities into one larger municipality, Godfrey's name was added to that city's list of municipal residents. Today, Godfrey is known as an important part of Springfield history and its economy because of his contributions to both the townspeople and their government
