Coast guard gift history in Godfrey, Illinois began with the establishment of the first coast guard station in this community by the then Illinois State Police on December 1, 1872. The town was designated as a port of entry for the Allen County line and early years were spent organizing and staffing the first coast guard station. The original personnel consisted of three men and one woman who served a three year term until 1875 when an addition was made to increase their number to six men. The service was also provided by two volunteer auxiliaries which continued until 1878 when state funding was cut off. The need for a new station became more apparent as smuggling grew increasingly sophisticated and it became necessary to have a manned coastguard station at all times in order to intercept smugglers coming into or leaving our state. In 1903, the state legislature appropriated $5,000 for the construction of a new coast guard post and on January 1, 1904, it was dedicated under the leadership of then-Governor James M. Hanna with local citizens present. Since its inception, Coast Guard Station Godfrey has played an important role in keeping our coastline safe from harm both during wartime and peacetime. Godfrey is a small town in Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Godfrey was platted on February 10, 1871 by J.H. Goldsborough and Wm.F. Burt as Godfrey Township (now Godfrey). The name honors General George Washington Hill. A post office was established at Godfrey on March 1, 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The first settler in what is now Godfrey were John Hammond and his family who arrived about 1851 from Massachusetts. In 1875 two brothers named Lewis set up a grocery store and soon other businesses followed suit before becoming an engine-manufacturer and general mercantile business with its own flour mill which still stands today on Main Street near the high school building next to the Walmart Supercenter; Lewis also provided lumber for their new store buildings along with many other items needed for early settlement including pioneer tools like axes, hoes, spades and saws which remain popular tourist attractions today In 1902 Drury Hogg founded what became known as Hogg's Drug Store & Creamery which remains one of the most successful drug stores in central Illinois to this day In 1960 voters approved a referendum calling for the townsite of Godfrey to be annexed into Aurora Township so that Aurora could become more populous but no action was taken because Aurora had more pressing concerns such as expanding their local library into the larger community . Although there has been occasional talk over the years about annexing Godfrey back into Aurora township it seems unlikely that anything will happen anytime soon given how different these two communities are while also possessing some key similarities such as both being small towns located within larger municipalities
The Coast Guard has been providing service to the people of the United States since 1828. The Coast Guard is responsible for protecting our coasts, waters and airspace. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has received many gifts from individuals and businesses alike. Some of these gifts include aircraft, boats, missiles, tools and even clothing! One of the most famous gifts given to the Coast Guard was a clipper ship in 1918 known as HMAS Melbourne. This gift was made in memory of Australian Prime Minister Arthur James Asquith who had served in World War I as a captain in the Royal Naval Air Service. The ship was donated by Sir John Latham-Bentinck who also donated two other ships to the Coast Guard- HMAS Perth and HMS Ocean. Another gift that was given to the Coast Guard was a submarine in 1942 known as USS Paddlewheel. This gift came in response to President Franklin D Roosevelt’s request for assistance during World War II. The Submarine Squadron 7 based at Portsmouth Bay had been tasked with finding enemy submarines operating off America’s coast. In return for their help, Congress passed a law authorizing President Roosevelt to give these submarines to the Navy on October 1st, 1942. Today, there are over 2200 members of the Coast Guard attached directly or through auxiliary units around America’s great Lakes region including those stationed at Duluth Harbor on Lake Superior; Great Lakes Marine Patrol Station、Chicago Port Authority Light; Detroit River Boat Basin; Governors Island; Long Island Sound; New York City; Tampa Bay Bridge District; and White Sands Missile Range (New Mexico). These men and women work together every day safeguarding our coastline and waters!

In 1912, however, Godfrey reverted to its earlier name and began to prosper once again. In 1937 it became a city under the jurisdiction of Rockford County. In 1979 it amalgamated with neighboring townships to form the current city of Godfrey. The city has since emerged as a major center for agricultural production and commerce in central Illinois. It is also home to several large schools and other public facilities, such as a library and parks system.
