Godfrey, Illinois was founded in 1871 when a group of farmers and their families came together to form the Godfrey Township Agricultural Society. The society began to sell products from its land, and soon had a store that served the town and surrounding villages. In 1887, the society moved its business to what is now the old Masonic Hall building on Main Street. In 1916, the townspeople decided to create an army unit in memory of their fallen soldiers. They organized a parade and raised money for uniforms and other equipment. After World War I ended, the townspeople disbanded their unit but kept the name “Godfrey” for themselves. In 1922, they voted to change the name of their unit back to “The Army” in honor of all our country's military veterans. Today, Godfrey is home to over 100 businesses that contribute to its economy; including two banks (One Trust Company & First National Bank), four grocery stores (Plymouth Grocery Co., Hardware Store Inc., Mrs. John Kapp’s Place Catering & banquet hall), three liquor stores (Alcoholics Anonymous Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission License #3-1), three Sheet Metal Workers Local Union No. 5 shop local union contract shops (American Foundry Sheet Metal Works No. 2187-A & 2027 E Main St.), five schools (4 high school grades through 8th grade) - four public schools and one private school - as well as over 50 acres of forested property providing Citizens with hunting opportunities, fishing opportunities and much more! Godfrey, Illinois Army National Guard unit history can be traced back to May 1865 when the site of what is now Godfrey was chosen as the new home for the 3rd Regiment, Infantry (later the 9th Regiment, Infantry). The regiment was organized at Godfrey on October 12, 1865. The regiment served in various campaigns and battles during Reconstruction before being mustered out on November 16, 1867. The 3rd Regiment then relocated to Springfield where it re-organized and redesignated as the 1st Battalion (2nd Regiment) of Artillery on December 1, 1868. It remained in that designation until its merger with the 2nd Battalion (3rd Regiment) of Artillery on January 1, 1890. On July 14, 1898 an act authorizing a permanent standing army was passed by Congress and signed into law by President William McKinley. This event led to a period of military growth in Illinois which included such units as the 3rd Regiment (now Godfrey's 9th Infantry), which became part of First United States Volunteer Cavalry on August 15, 1898. The unit continued its military activity until September 1899 when it reverted back to infantry status and ceased operations altogether.
Godfrey is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,567 at the 2010 census. The name honors Godfrey Macklinore, an early settler in the area. Godfrey was chartered on March 3, 1834 by James Krieger and others as a village of Eureka Township. On December 10, 1835 it was organized as a town by First State Bank of Chicago under the name of "Godfrey." On February 20, 1853 it became a city with a population of 15,000 and on November 8, 1896 it became a county seat. In 1900 the first post office opened in Godfrey and remained open until 1954 when it moved to Terre Haute. The first industry in Godfrey was agriculture with some logging but later there were also small businesses such as J&J Lumber near downtown and Wrigley's candy store on Main Street which still operates today. Manufacturing also began to grow around this time including Union Carbide Company (now Avon Products) in downtown and various items for Sears & Roebuck before dwindling away over time to be replaced by service companies like Comcast that have now become dominant here. Nowadays only two small businesses remain: Grits 'N' Grains (formerly Tinker's) on Maple Street near central square and the old Masonic Temple which is now home to IHOP restaurant. In recent years there has been some redevelopment taking place with new housing being built along with several parks including one devoted specifically to bicycling called Green Park located just east of downtown next to Steel Pier/Lake Michigan where large concerts are always held during summertime.) The economy has changed quite significantly since its peak in 2000 when many jobs were available here but most have since moved out into other parts of the country or left entirely due to automation or globalization).

In addition to these professional units there were also many amateurs who formed small bands or militias to support their individual villages or towns during times of peace or war. These civilians often supplied troops with food and ammunition as well as providing them with leadership skills when needed. Frequently these volunteer units were not equipped nor trained like professional formations but instead relied mainly on their own strength and local knowledge for defense against potential enemies outside their community or region. Many groups such as these fought alongside citizen battalions known as kuriosoi although they ultimately did not receive any formal military training or organization like regular troops do today.
