Glenview is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 30,635 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Northwestern Illinois and one of the nine cities in Cook County that are considered part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city was founded by John Pritzker and his brother Emanuel Pritzker in 1847 as a small community on a bend in the river west of present-day Glenview. The name derived from "Glen" (a short form of "John"), and "VIEW" (a view). At first, Glenview consisted only of two homes, each owned by Pritzker family members. In 1868, when John Pritzker donated land to make up what would become downtown Glenview, he also agreed to be its first mayor. By 1890, Glenview had an estimated population of 10 thousand people. In 1904–1905, Mayor George Washington Kapp established Park West Branch Library which served as the town's library for 38 years before being replaced by current Glenbrook branch library in 1998. In 1919 Kapp established Central Avenue along which residents could purchase gasoline without having to go into town; this became known as Kapp Boulevard after him. In 1925 Wernher von Braun developed a rocket technology demonstration ground outside of Glendale Heights called Glennon Field during World War II; it later became Rocketdyne Laboratory adjacent to Soldier Field where some world famous scientific achievements were made including: Goddard's moon landing; Lawrence Radiation Lab time warp experiment; development of digital photography and television; launch of Ulysses S Grant satellite; NASA’s Juno mission); among others Kapp Boulevard was renamed Von Braun Drive after him following his death in 1987 while living in Rancho Mirage Hills, California After World War IIglenview experienced rapid growth with many new businesses opening up such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JBL Corporation (then Magnavox), Armour garment company etc., although housing approvals were slow until 1957 when Mayor William Ziegler approved plans for 6500 single family homes with attached garage spaces on Oak Lawn Avenue directly across from Rockridge Stadium causing much speculation within the community about whether or not shopping malls would eventually replace traditional Village stores near schools

Glenview is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Glenview was John Purdy in 1824. He and his family erected the first log cabin in what is now Glenview. In 1827, Purdy married Deborah Lewis and they started to raise livestock on their property. They also built a small frame house which still stands today on Maple Street near Van Buren Avenue. In 1838, Joseph White settled in Glenview and died there two years later from yellow fever contracted while travelling through Texas with his family. His wife Sarah moved to Glenview with him and raised their children here. white-owned businesses began to open up in Glenview starting with a refreshment stand operated by Isaac Goodspeed in 1850 which became known asthe Gondola
Glenview was founded in 1855 by John and Sarah McDonald. The McDonalds were the first white settlers in what is now Glenview. The town was named for their father, Donald MacArthur, who also died in1855. In 1881, the town took its present name from Glenview Township, which it had annexed into in 1870.
