Glenview is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,383 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European settler in Glenview was John Callahan, who arrived in 1827. In 1834, James Hurlbut and his family moved from Galena to Glenview and began farming land that became known as "the Callahan tract." The Hurlbuts were among the earliest settlers on what would become Glenview Township. In 1841, David Waddell purchased 1,500 acres (540 ha) of land east of present-day Glenview from Daniel Drake for $3 per acre. This purchase formed the nucleus of what would become East Glendale Township and Waddell's farmstead remains one of the oldest continuously inhabited homes in Illinois. In 1847, Joseph Reardon settled on a tract of land west of present-day Glendale that he called "Reedy's Run". He built a log cabin near the confluence of Mifflin Creek and Big Creek to serve as his home and store until he sold it in 1865 to George Nesselrode. Nesselrode also built a mill on Reedy's Run which became one of the most important mills in Glenview during its early years. In 1854, Abraham Lincoln made an address at West High School which helped spur development around this site into what is now downtownGlenview. This event is commemorated by Monument Number 4 located near State Street and Halsted Street across from Park Avenue Elementary School (now Prairie View A&M University). President Abraham Lincoln passed through Glendale several times while staying at Mr. Reardon's house before leaving for Washington D C on July 4th 1861; this event is commemorated by Monument Number 6 located across State Street from Park Avenue Elementary School (now Prairie View A&M University). On May 3rd 1870, Elijah Bogue founded Bogue & Co., one of two largest clothing stores in Chicago at that time. The store grew rapidly due to its innovative methods for marketing clothing including using horses drawn carts filled with pre-packaged clothes to dispensate products directly to customers' doors instead of having clerks carry items up and down flights of stairs like other retailers did then! The company prospered until 1975 when it was acquired by Sears Roebuck & Co., becoming their second largest business after Sears! Glenview, Illinois was founded in 1827 by James Glen and his wife Catharine. The town was named after the first settler, John Glen. By 1830, the town had a population of about 350 people. In 1835, the village of Glenview was organized and began to grow. The first post office opened in Glenview on October 7, 1835. In 1850, the village of Glenview merged with the town of Urbana to form a new municipality. In 1865, following the American Civil War, Union General Robert Ewell captured Chicago and moved its military garrison eastward into Illinois. The land around Glendale became part of Chicago; however, much of what is now Glenview remained rural until it was annexed by Chicago in 1865. In 1870-71, efforts were made to reestablish a railway through Glendale and Urbana but these failed because of disagreements over rights for railroad access between these townships (Urbana got most clauses). By 1900 there were only about 100 residents living in Glendale; however it continued to grow rapidly due to immigration from Hungary and other countries during this time period. On November 5th 1916 when World War I ended early due to US entry into war on April 6th 1915 - Glendale's incorporation as a city occurred days later on November 11th 1916
