Glenview is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Glenview were farmers who came to the area from parts of New England in 1836. A post office called Glenview was established in 1864, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1916. In 1886, the village of Glenview was organized as a result of an act of the state legislature. At its incorporation, the village had a population of just over 100 people. Glenview experienced rapid growth during the years following its incorporation; by 1912 it had increased to over 1,500 residents and had formed a school board and city council. Even after World War I ended, however, growth stopped and by 1920 only 915 people lived in Glenview – this despite efforts by local officials to increase development around the center of town. During the 1920s and 1930s, there were several attempts by developers to establish large subdivisions within Glenview limits; these failed because resentment against such developments grew among some residents who felt that their community would be destroyed if such projects were undertaken. In 1935–1936 an attempt was made to merge two nearby villages into one – this also failed due to resistance from some residents who felt that they had been left out of important decisions made regarding those villages’ future). A major economic development event occurred during these years when construction began on Interstate 80 (the then-new expressway). This led to job creation and additional housing development throughout much of Cook County; as a result, GlenVIEW became one of Illinois’ most rapidly growing communities during this time period. By 1990GlenVIEW's population totaled 2,883 with plans for even more growth underway!
