Glenview is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,212 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Park Ridge and Wheeling. The name "Glenview" may be derived from the Scottish word "Gleann", meaning "place of trees." The original home of the Glenview family was on a hill above what is now Glenview Cemetery. In 1792, Captain John Glen (1763-1838), an American Revolutionary War veteran and landowner in what is now Glenview Township served as first postmaster of Wheeling Township after moving there from Baltimore. In 1802, Captain John's grandson Colonel James Fenton (1789-1860) purchased 800 acres (30 km²) of land east of Wheeling township and built aottage there called Mount Lebanon on top of which he named his new township after his old home village in Scotland – Glenloch Castle. In 1836, Colonel James' son Colonel George Fenton (1800-1868) moved his large farmstead to its present site near Glenview Creek where he built two subscription barns for use by subscribers to The Chicago Aurora newspaper company. He also laid out a road through his 640 acre farmstead that became known as Elm Street today and which still exists as one mile long and 1/2 miles wide arterial street with 5 lanes divided into two blocks heading north then turning left at Elm Street to continue south to Uptown Chicago. This road provided easy access for goods movement through the rolling farmland surrounding him until it was replaced by Interstate 95 when it was built adjacent to his farmstead in 1956. On July 4th, 1857, Reverend Wm Heman Greenough officiated at the dedication ceremonies for Mr & Mrs Leland Stanford's new Methodist Church located just east of present day Glengarry Road between State Line Rd./Upton Rd./GlenVIEW RD./Wichita Dr., today part of Northwestern Illinois University’s Evanston Campus across from Northwestern Memorial Hospital (@Url: /northwesternillinois). Reverend Greenough had been invited by Mr & Mrs Stanford to preach their reformation sermon following their purchase of lot #5 On December 8th 1856 from Rufus King (#27) adjoining modern day Glengarry Road opposite Sherman Oaks Golf Course @Url: /golferscourse/; lot #6 followed on January 11th 1860 opposite current day Kresge's Pharmacy (@Url: /kresge/). At this time Rev'd Greenough became pastor emeritus facto & services were held Sundays except during Holy Week @Url: /www.revwinternationalistchurchofilinois . After serving twenty years in that position Rev'd Greenough retired effective Jan 1st 1907 but continued to attend services until his death on May 15th 1913 aged 86 years @Url: /www.revwini1presents/. In 1949, Glenview opened its own air force base which quickly became an integral part of local military aviation services; today it still functions as one of Illinois' primary bases for military operations. During much of its history – from earlysettlement through Prohibition and post-war boom years – Glenside residents have been fiercely loyal to their smalltown values and traditions (a tradition that has held strong despite various moves away from central Illinois). This continuing commitment has resulted in many unique aspects of Glenside life remaining unchanged over time: From monthly dances around a firepit on Main Street to electing their own school board members via secret ballot every four years (unlike other communities where elections are held throughout township), these residents continue to maintain tight control over their community while enjoying all that local culture has to offer. In recent decades there have been some positive changes take place within Glenside: A number of new businesses have come online including a grocery store/ocarvery center/cafeteria complex along with two homeschooling facilities; however, many residents remain staunchly supportive of their hometown's traditional ways while still looking out for each other's interests
The village of Glenview, Illinois was platted in 1887. It is named after the Falls of the Danube, which are located upstream from the village. The falls are about 12 miles (19 km) northwest of Glenview.
