Glenview, Illinois is located in the northwest corner of Cook County. The city was named after the Glenview family, who were early settlers in the area. The population of Glenview was 3,898 at the 2010 census. The city is home to a variety of businesses and organizations including two hospitals, four universities, two parks and one shopping mall. In addition to its downtown core, which includes a library, museum and art galleries, there are several neighborhoods within town: Douglas Park on the south side of town; west side near Chicago River; east side near North Avenue; and north side near Mount Prospect Road. Glenview first appeared on maps as early as 1839 when it was part of McLean Township. On March 14, 1857, it became an independent village under the name of Highland Park. On November 4 that year, Highland Park was merged with Ridgefield to form Glenview Village. There were various attempts to rename the city after other people or places over the years but no success. Finally in 1958 when officials realized that no other cities had been named after people they decided on Glenview as an honorific for Arlene Dickinson (1897-1985), widow of Jesse Dickinson (1871-1952). At her request local merchants agreed to give their names free reign in naming their businesses after honored citizens or townsfolk from their locality if they pleased - such as Mr./ Mrs./Dr., etc.), but no names actually came about until later during her ownership when some locals began giving their own businesses unique namesakes like "The Gilded Age" or "Empire Builder". In 1963 General Motors announced plans to open a new plant adjacent to its Piquette Plant in nearby Laytonville which would employ 6500 workers creating what would be GM's largest single investment outside America since World War II.
