The Glenview Coast Guard Station became a part of the United States Coast Guard in 1912. The station was originally located on the Fox River and served as a port of entry for goods arriving from abroad. Glenview is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,523 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name comes from the English word "glew", meaning "a light". Glenview was organized as a village on December 15, 1853 by James McDonnell and others. On November 3, 1857, it became a town when its first president, Isaac H. Goodwin, approved a petition to that effect from settlers George and John Pritzker. The townsite was named for George Washington Gale (1784-1861), an investor in the Town of Palatine (now Wheaton). On October 10, 1861, the original post office opened with David Hoyle as its first clerk and Samuel Fenton as editor of the Daily Herald. The site now occupied by Glenview had been inhabited since before 1800 by members of the Potawatomie Native American tribe who called themselves Nacogdoches or Shawnee because they were originally from what is now Ohio. In 1795–96 Major General Anthony Wayne's army destroyed their villages along the Ottawa River due to raids on their cornfields; this event led to what is known as the Northwest Indian War and has been chronicled in various forms ever since. After Wayne's victory over France at Yorktown in 1781 his troops burned down some of these villages while plundering their crops downstream; so effective was thisraid that Potawatomies temporarily abandoned their warring ways and moved permanently north into Canada around 1800 according to one account In 1802 Ulysses S Grant visited Nacogdoches Chief Black Hawk and convinced him to sign an treaty ceding all land east of Cahokia Heights south of I-35 to Springfield Township under military occupation until such time as Congress could grant ownership rights to those living there; following this treaty most Potawatomie Indians relocated outside Illinois In 1827 James McDonnell bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) northeast of Glenview's current location on High Street from Nicholas Biddle for $100 + costs for road construction which he dedicated May 6th 1830 (the date still celebrated annually by residents in honor of James McDonnell). This tract became known as McDonnell Square after mcDonnell’s grandson who donated it during World War II .
