Glenview is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It lies east of Chicago on the border of Cook and Kane Counties. Glenview began as a farming community and was originally called "Nappanee". The name change occurred when a post office was established in 1868 with the name "Nappanee Falls". At first, most residents were farmers; however, over time many became professionals or entrepreneurs. By 1959, Glenview had become an affluent suburb of Chicago. The region that now includes Glenview was first settled by Indian tribes in the area that is now Cook County about two hundred years ago. One account tells of early French traders who discovered what is now Glenview while exploring for trade routes to New Orleans in 1785-86. George Washington visited Nappaquock County around this time and may have been influenced by what he saw here. When the Illinois Central Railroad arrived in 1847, parts of this area became part of its line from Wheaton to Aurora. In 1861, when railroads were becoming more common across America, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill authorizing tracks to be built through Nappaquock County including what is now Glenview Township and sections of Kane and Will counties. The townships along these lines were organized on February 14th 1863 under legislation introduced by Congressman Lorenzo Morrow (D-Chicago). The township's first meeting took place on October 12th 1863 at which time it consisted of just six settlers: John Haggerty (a carpenter), James Brown (a laborer), Elisha Goodrich (a farmer), Abraham Lincoln( son of John Lincoln), Solomon Lovejoy (carpenter) and Abram Funkenstein (laborer). It wasn't until after World War II that developers began arriving in large numbers in north suburban Chicago with plans to build high-rise housing developments such as those seen today in nearby Oak Park/River Forest or Northbrooks etceteras adjacent to existing industrial centers such as Ford Motor Company or DuPont etceteras located close to major airports like Midway Airport or O'Hare International Airport
