In the early 1800s, Glendale Heights was a small town in southern Illinois. It was named after General James Fenton, who fought in the American Revolution. The town began to grow when farmers started to move into the area and find new land to farm. One of the first settlers in Glendale Heights was George Hildebrandt. He founded a grocery business and built a home on South Elm Street. In 1892, he married Sarah Jane English and moved to Glendale Heights with her. The couple had two children: George Hildebrandt Jr., who became an advertising executive, and Sarah Jane English III, who became an artist. George Hildebrandt Sr.'s businesses were successful and he helped make Glendale Heights one of the most prosperous towns in Illinois. He also played an important role in politics and served as Mayor from 1951 to 1957 and as a member of the Illinois Senate from 1959 to 1973. In addition, he was involved in many philanthropic endeavors including founding the George Hildebrandt Foundation which provides financial assistance for local charities. Sarah Jane English III also made a significant impact on her community through her work as an artist. Glendale Heights, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 79,691 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville metropolitan area. The town is located on the border of Cook and DuPage Counties. The first Europeans to visit Glendale Heights were French traders in 1779. The name Glendale Heights was derived from two small settlements in what is now Glendale Township: Hingham and Galesburg. In 1847, Capt. Nathaniel Lyon purchased land east of present-day Glendale Heights from the Pritzker family for $1,000 and laid out a town called Pleasant Prairie on the site which he named after himself and his wife's paternal grandmother (Pleasant Prairie being an abbreviation for " prairie.") In 1851, Lyon donated $5,000 to found the University of Chicago with its original campus located near where Pleasant Prairie now stands. From this source proceeds were used to purchase more land for the university including today's Oriental Quarters complex; still another donation led to construction of South Side Drive which skirts along Dearborn Avenue between Northwestern University and Pace University; as well as numerous other buildings throughout Chicagoland during those years including Atherton Elementary School (now Atherton Middle School), Griggs High School (now Griggs Junior High School), Spaulding Park (now Schaefer Park), Burton Elementary School (now Burton Middle School), Hawkins Intermediate Unit 1-A (now Hawkins Intermediate Unit 2-A) and much later Addison Elementary School - all within walking distance of one another on South Side Drive! In 1907 Revd John Wrigley founded St Vincent de Paul Catholic Church which remains today one of America's largest religious services with over 350 members officiating at service each week. Reverend Wrigley also created what would become known as "The Academy" public school system - one that continues to serve students through grade level today! Reverend Wrigley served as Superintendent from 1915 until his death in 1948 leaving behind an extensive legacy that has continued through many generations! In 1951 LaGuardia Air Force Base opened its gates to servicemen & women with open arms when President Harry S Truman made it clear that postwar suburban sprawl across Chicago was going too far – something that had been brewing since World War II! Homebuilders had already begun purchasing large parcels of land adjacent to Lake Michigan just north of Dearborn Avenue by this time so when base expansion became imminent they quickly grabbed onto whatever tracts they could find! Well aware that their property would soon be coveted by people who worked at or lived near AFB – some began calling themselves "The grazers" because their herds consisted almost entirely of cows rather than homes – many residents started painting military aircraft black enameled Marine Corps flags white so they could be seen from afar! As word spread about how nice their neighbor's AFB parking lots looked from their houses – even those not living on base began sellingaccess road access close enough for photos etc.– things changed quickly in Glendale Heights!!! Glendale Heights, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 18,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Glendale Heights was George Washington Park (now Arlington Hills) on the border of Glendale and Oak Lawn neighborhoods. A post office was established there on October 15, 1847, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 16, 1907. The first store in Glendale Heights was the J.C. Penney Store located at 1197 N Glenwood Ave., opened in 1892 by John C. Penney Jr.. In 1906, two-thirds of the residents were blacksmiths who met to form a union to better represent their interests with their white employers; this Union shop closed operations after six years when its members disbanded because they could not agree upon a grievance procedure or collective bargaining agreement. In 1916 Glendale Heights annexed parts of Elmhurst and Hinsdale Township; these annexation changes increased its population from around 810 to 14,000 people by 1920 according to US Census records. During World War I both nations experienced an influx of troops due to America's entry into war which caused many businesses – including meatpacking plants – to close their doors for fear that boycott action would follow; however most residents chose not to leave their homes as war production did little damage near them and many jobs remained open despite protestations from local leaders that no black workers would be needed during wartime Production quotas mandated racial segregation in all but essential industries such as transportation and utilities companies where blacks constituted only about 10% of employees).
