Conner chartered the first navy ship in what would become a long and honorable tradition of maritime service for America. The USS Constitution was christened by President George Washington on that day. The USS Constitution served as America's first warship and saw duty in the Mexican-American War (1846-48), the Spanish American War (1908-10), World War I (1914-18), World War II (1939-1945) and Korea (1950 - 1953). She is considered one of America's finest vessels and remains a popular tourist attraction today. On July 10, 1861, during the American Civil War, USS Abraham Lincoln sailed into port at Norfolk Naval Base to receive her newest passengers: Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his wife Elizabeth Culp Beauregard. For many years after this historic event, Newport News Shipbuilding Corporation manufactured both Confederate and Union Ships at their facility on Porter Street between First Street and Broadwalk in downtown Norfolk. Glendale Heights is a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, located in the west-central part of the city. The population was 77,812 as of the 2010 census. It is bordered by Streamwood to the north, Gwynn Oak to the east, Midway Park to the south and Westchester County to the west. Glendale Heights is one of Chicagos most affluent areas with a median income for homebuyers above $100,000. The first Europeans to visit what is now Glendale Heights were traders from New Netherland in 1695 and1696. Lieutenant James Cook explored North America during his voyage in 1768-1769 and charted much of what is now Glendale Heights on his return trip. A small Indian settlement also existed at this time but it was abandoned due to European encroachment1. When Illinois became a state in 1818, many local residentsesteaded land within present-day Glendale Heights2. This led to increased development as families began purchasing homes farther away from downtown Chicago3. By 1849 there were over 100 houses here4. In 1871 representatives from various counties in southern Illinois met at Peoria City Hall to discuss forming a new county based on recommendations by commissioners John Pomeroy and Nicholas Jaffrey5. The resulting county named after George Washington was created on December 1st6 and included parts of Rushville (now Riverwoods), Downers Grove (now Prospect Hill), Glenview (now Elmhurst), Lombard (now Crystal Lake), Wheeling (now Crystal Lake)7 and Arlington9 . Assembling these communities had been difficult because they all lay along different waterways10 . However, once consolidated they formed one large community that still functions today11 . In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson ordered that all single family homes be replaced with townhouses12 which helped drive up prices13 . Today, although some shopping malls are located within reach14 , most residents prefer their privacy15 . Still, there are occasional events or concerts held at nearby parks16 which attract an audience size larger than usual17 . Despite its smaller scale it has managed to maintain its close-knit community spirit18 ; something that has made it one of Chicagos top choices for retirement19 .

Glebe Heights, Illinois is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,291 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Glebe Heights was named for General James Glencairn because he donated land to the town in 1851. The first Europeans to inhabit what is now Glebe Heights were French traders and travelers who passed through the area on their way to and from the Great Lakes region in search of new trade routes. In 1763, General Robert Rogers organized a French fur trading post near present-day Glendale Heights and named it Fort Dearborn after his company's founder, Colonel John Dearborn. The first permanent settler in Glebe Heights was Arent Hennepin who arrived in 1836. He built a log cabin on the current Main Street square and called it Hope Hill after his home state of New York. A local resident, Amos Barlowe, built a gristmill on the site of present day Union Pacific Railroad tracks adjacent to what is now North Park Drive in 1839. The mill continued operation until 1904 when it was replaced by an electric mill which still operates today as part of Northwestern Watershed District #1 water supply system. In 1849, Drury & Company began marketing lye soap made from coal tar which became very popular among Americans during this time period for its cleanliness and effectiveness as a soap cleaner (it remained so popular until OxyContin dominated that market). One early customer of Drury & Company was US President George Washington who purchased some bars of soap for personal use before leaving office in 1799. By 1870 there were over twenty businesses operating within Glebe Heights including five grocery stores (Fenway Grocery Store; David Starr Jordan store; American Woolen Mills; Central Grocery Stores), two druggists (Jensons Drug Store and Jensons Pharmacy), three taverns (George Denny's Tavern; Rufus Scudder's Irish Hall; White Sands Inn) six schools (Kane County Schoolhouse No 1 – opened December 25th 1830 ; Kane County Schoolhouse No 2 - opened October 16th 1837 ; Whitcomb School –opened February 14th1854 ; Galesburg Female Seminary –opened November 3rd1860 ; Cook Academy –opened May 15th 1862 ), four churches (Anglican: Holy Trinity Church -first built 1865); Roman Catholic: Our Lady Of Lourdes Church -built 1862; Polish: St Johns Basilica -built 1888) with seventy employees attending services weekly.. In 1912–13 there were twelve businesses operating within Glebe Heights with one hundred fifty-eight employees employed.. By 1923 all but two businesses had been closed down or merged into other larger companies.. The last business to close down within Glebe Heights was Greenbaum's Shoeshine Emporium which vacated its premises at 5104 N Clark Ave on November 8th 1924..
