Glendale Heights is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 85,607 as of the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Chicago and the second-largest city in Illinois after Chicago. Glendale Heights was founded on November 6, 1887 by then-Mayor James C. Bennett and other leaders of the newly created Village of Glendale Heights. The first settlers wereigrants from Italy and Ireland. By 1907, the village had a population of 1,500 people. That year, Bennett announced that he would not seek re-election as mayor but would remain on the Glendale Heights City Council until his death in 1909. In 1916, Mayor John Fenton also submitted his resignation due to health reasons but continued to serve as mayor until he resigned two years later due to cancer diagnosis. On July 1, 1919, voters passed a ballot measure creating a new city government with a single mayoral term instead of three mayoral terms like at that time. This change led to an increase in spending on municipal services because only one person could be held accountable for all decisions made within the municipality - Mayor John Fenton himself
