The name comes from Glendale Township and Hacienda Park which were both named for rancho (ranch) in Mexico City. According to the 2010 census, Glendale Heights has a total area of , of which (or 99%) is land and (or 1%) is water. The first settlers in what would become Glendale Heights were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1847. By 1860, there were 10 families living in the community. In 1871, Glendale Heights became a village when it incorporated as a result of an act of the General Assembly approved by referendum. At that time it had a total population of 350 people and consisted only of men over 21 years old who paid $5 per year to reside within the limits of the village government. In 1915, while still part of Cook County, Glendale Heights annexed portions of neighboring Morton Grove into its city limits; this annexation increased its population to 2,000 residents by 1920. In 1953, following annexations by other towns in Cook County such as Maywood and Elmhurst,[1] Glendale Heights became one-third city with a mayor-council form of government under which each ward elects two members to serve four-year terms on an at-large basis;[2] these wards are now represented by mayoral candidates running together as nonpartisan blocs without any individual voting power or role within the council.[3][4] On November 3rd 2013 Donald Trump was elected 45th President Of The United States
