In 1881, Glen Ellyn became a city when its boundaries were set by state legislature as part of the Chicago Act which merged many small towns into one large municipality. Glen Ellyn has been home to several famous people including Harry Houdini, Steve Jobs, and Neil Armstrong. Houdini performed his first show in Glen Ellyn in 1915 and spent years performing there before moving to New York City in 1922. Jobs began his career as an advertising sales representative for Wernher von Braun's space research firm during World War II, eventually becoming Apple's CEO and co-founder withSteve Wozniak. Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon during Apollo 11 after participating in a feasibility study for an all-new spacecraft design at nearby Carbondale Air Force Base led by Von Braun himself

Glen Ellyn is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,822 as of the 2010 census. It is the political and economic center of the village of Glen Ellyn and part of Chicago's South Side. Glen Ellyn was founded in 1853 by Methodist missionaries from Kentucky. The first settler was James Fenton, who arrived in a wagon with his family on February 17, 1853. The town was named for General John A. McClernand, commander of Union forces during the American Civil War. In 1860, Glen Ellyn had a population of 350 people; it grew to 1,200 by 1870. The railroad reached Glen Ellyn in 1872 and made it an important transportation hub for southern Illinois and Northwestern Indiana. By 1900, Glen Ellyn had become one of the most prosperous communities in America because of its position as a major manufacturing center for agriculture and textiles; construction began on several large factories including Wabash Textile Company ( later Westinghouse Electric) and Singer Sewing Machine Company (later Motorola). The automobile industry took off after World War II; by 1960 GlenEllyn had over 100 auto dealerships and more than 2 dozen Chevrolet Chevrolets per capita! With new housing developments such as Oakbrook Terrace (1957), Boulevard Gardens (1963), River Edge Estates (1968), Forest Lake Village (1982), Parkway Place (1989) and many other subdivisions being developed throughout the 1970s-1990s –Glen Ellyn became known as one of "the great residential cities" in North America! In 2000-2001 residents voted to establish themselves as their own municipality through incorporation under the name "GlenEllyn Township." This led to many changes which have continued into today: amendments to the zoning ordinances which mandate that all single-family homes must be built at least 50 feet wide x 30 feet deep or larger if they are set back from street level; limits on building sizes within certain areas which affect everything from single detached houses to whole neighborhoods; restrictions placed on development along riverfront corridors - these constraints have helped keep much rural landownerCharacteristics alive while creating dozens high-density multifamily buildings near downtown businesses
Glen Ellyn, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 80,691 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Illinois and the second-largest city in Chicagoland. The first settlers of what would become Glen Ellyn were people who arrived on the Great Lakes region during the early 1800s. One of these pioneers was John Parkhurst, who settled on a small tract of land that now includes much of present day Glen Ellyn. In 1836, David Ralston founded what would become Des Plaines Township. A year later he donated 2 acres (0.8 km2) to be used as a town square and named it after himself, Glen Ellyn Township. John Parkhurst had two sons: Michael and George Washington Parkhurst. The elder Parkhurst served as Mayor of Glen Ellyn from 1865 to 1870 and again from 1872 to 1874; his son also served as mayor for four terms between 1899 and 1903 according to History of Cook County website (http://www.cookcountyilinois.gov/History/default_pages/Parkshorea%20township_1836-1903). In 1842 Peter Ziegler bought 640 acres (248 ha), which included part of what would become Glendale Heights today, including present day Glen Ellyn Township and several other settlements near Chicago eastward along Kedzie Avenue until all but one were dissolved into Chicago Borough by Act No.-15 Geo - V Ill no 782 approved Feb 1st 1861 . That lot being divided among brothers Samuel Sargent & Gridley Farnsworth became cornerstones in forming Greenfield Village east of Kedzie Ave., with name changed Dec 12th 1863 when village becameGlenElla following donation from Mr Globe Erector
