The Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1892. The department has served the community for over 100 years. In 1924, the volunteer fire department merged with the city's Municipal Fire Department and became the Glen Ellyn Municipal Fire Department. The department has been staffed by firefighters from all walks of life since then, including mayors, City Council members, police officers, and Bravest Warriors volunteers.
Glen Ellyn, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. The name Glen Ellyn is derived from two settler names which are also part of the town's name: Hall and Ellis. The first European to visit what is now Glen Ellyn was John Fenton in 1801. He named the area after his friend and mentor, Colonel James Hall (1775-1836). In 1837, Colonel Hall sold land east of present day Glen Ellyn to a group of settlers led by Amos Stroud. The new settlers founded the town on November 3, 1837 as Blooming Grove Township. At first there were 150 residents in Blooming Grove Township; however, by 1840 the township had grown to 300 residents. In 1850, a post office was established at Blooming Grove and it remained in operation until 1915 when it was moved to Elginnese Prairie and renamed Elmira Post Office. In 1888, David Winton built Winton House which served as a social center for early Glen Ellyn citizens. It is still standing today and is one of the most important historical landmarks in the town. In 1914-15 Frank Lloyd Wright designed and built three houses in what is now known as Wright Park within walking distance of Winton House - These houses are now used as housing units for people with mental health issues or other special needs

It is the county seat of Cook County and part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Glen Ellyn" is derived from the Shawnee word "Glewenni", meaning 'place where the eagle nests'. The first white people to settle in what is now Glen Ellyn were French voyageurs who arrived in 1763. They named their new settlement after Lord Baltimore's estate near Annapolis Royal in Canada. The original town site would later be owned by John Pritzker, Sr., founder of Chicago. He donated land to build a shopping mall on his property that became one of downtown Chicago's most popular tourist destinations. By 1860, Glen Ellyn had over 100 residents and was a major agricultural center with dairy and pork production; however, it would not become an important urban center until after World War II when its growth accelerated due to its close proximity toChicago and other leading cities throughout Illinois." In 1836, Drury Local School District No. 2 organized as a school district under the system then known as “common schools” which provided instruction for all children between 6 and 24 months old regardless of family income or educational opportunities outside of home. This system continued through school consolidation during the 1870s when all village-level public schools within each municipality were consolidated into common schools districts created pursuant to state Education Code Section 3362(a). With only rural areas remaining unincorporated through this period there was practically no education available for citizens over age 25 living outside incorporated municipalities other than those attending services provided by village trustees or college-educated teachers employed by municipal corporations operating under state charter laws." On November 15th 1868 voters approved annexation by Urbana Township of Champaign County making Glen Ellyn a full township with voting rights equal to any other township in Cook County including Champaign County townships that had been annexed since before 1848 such as Rockford Township (1838), Belvidere Township (1850), Danville Township (1858), Niles Township (1871), Elgin Township (1881) etc...This crushed opposition from local farmers who saw their livelihoods threatened by annexation which also increased taxes paid by members of newly formed municipalities combined with suburban expansion which destroyed many small farms." After much wrangling among officials culminating with approval from both branches of government on November 15th 1868 Glen Ellyn became an unincorporated community within CookCounty
Glen Ellyn was founded in 1857 by John H. Glen and his wife, Catharine. The town was named for the Ellyn Hills, a mountain range that lies to the north of the town. In 1865, Clarendon College was founded in Glen Ellyn and it remains one of the most popular colleges in Illinois.
