It is the county seat of McLean County and lies about 20 miles west-northwest of Chicago. The village of Glen Ellyn was incorporated in 1892. The community's name comes from a bleak but beautiful mountain peak near its center. At one time it was thought that the peak's name referred to an area of high potential for timber; however, this theory has since been debunked as spurious! Today, though, people in Glen Ellyn know their town best because it is home to some of America's most popular tourist attractions - including The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), which enrolls over 40% of all UIUC students; two shopping malls - One within walking distance from Glen Ellyn's central square and another just outside the border on Interstate 94; and two professional sports teams - the Blackhawks and Kings - both based in Chicago. The history of Glen Ellyn goes back before there were humans living here: early settlers arrived during the 1800s as part of waves of immigrants who came to escape religious persecution in Europe. In 1835, landowner James Dolan donated 1,000 acres (400 hectares) east side Of town to become what would eventually be called "Dolan Park." This parcel became known for its abundance of wild game resources such as deer and bear, which contributed greatly to local subsistence until European settlement began driving those animals off-the-land into neighboring townships where they could no longer survive due to hunting pressure or disease introduced by Europeans. During World War II, local farmers turned their attentions towards making munitions plants possible on campus at UIUC – later becoming known as "Glen ELLYN Unit" – while military personnel conducted essential research and development activities nearby at nearby Wright Patterson Air Force Base (later Wright Paterson National Laboratory). That same decade saw construction begin on what would become downtown Glencullen Drive with business owners setting up shop along Elm Street between Fifth Avenue North and E street South until 1942 when USAAF Station Elmendorf closed Effective January 1st 1945 following Japan’s surrender! Downtown Glencullen Drive quickly grew into one large commercial district bustling with activity day & night during wars & peacetime alike! Afterglow from WWII left many businesses still open & thriving today despite increased competition from online retailers (& other mega-retailers). However some icons soon went outpace even wartime boom times (& closures followed): iconic eatery Chili’s Chain took over much unused Main Street storefront space vacated by Pizzazz Pizza prior to opening in 1984; attire store Secondhand Outfitters relocated less than 2 blocks away onto newly developed property now occupied by Nordstrom Rack; lastly movie theater Regal Cinemas shuttered its doors after more than 25 years operation following failed investments by city officials looking only towards redevelopment/ gentrification instead…thus leaving downtown Glencullen Drive largely deserted except for occasional shoppers coming through main streetside intersections seeking quaint clothing stores or sought out family entertainment options…& again life returned to normalcy almost immediately upon closure several weeks later! A new era began when vehicle ownership began decreasing throughout much rural Cook County beginning around 1960 resulting in smaller tracts available for farming production yielding diminishing returns leading ultimately to declines in population density also associated with overall economic decline throughout Cook County starting about 1970″ See: "Glen Ellyn Village History Timeline"
