The town was founded in 1836 by two brothers, John and David Thomson. It became an incorporated village in 1855. The name originated from a grant from President George Washington to the Thomson brothers for land on the western side of Chicago. In 1886, Glen Ellyn Ladies' Forum was organized and opened to women in the then-unorganized town of Glen Ellyn. John Thomson died suddenly while governor of Illinois in 1847; his brother followed him only four years later and founded Thomson's Mills adjacent to modern day Glen Ellyn with his wealth derived from their milling operations. The original village plat included three streets: Second Street east-west, Third Street north-south and Fourth Street east-west which were named after American presidents who had given land to the town: George Washington (1789-1865), James Kossuth (1846-1904), and Ulysses S Grant (1822-1881).
