It is the site of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The village of Glen Ellyn was organized in 1868 by Colonel John Richardson. He donated land to form the village and named it after his native land in Scotland. The Village Board voted on January 8, 1969 to change its name from Glen Ellyn to Urbana-Champaign to reflect its growing academic importance. The name change has been effective since then and Urbana-Champaign now distinguishes itself as one of America's leading universities. Glen Ellyn is located about 12 miles southeast of downtown Chicago on I-90 (the expressway). Interstate 90 opened in 1973 and provides easy access to downtown Chicago for residents and visitors alike. This resulted in the dissolution of Glen Ellyn into its individual constituent parts and it has been a part of Cook County since 2000. Glen Ellyn is known for its massive McCormick corn production facility which is one of the largest in the world and covers an area of approximately 40 acres. The facility produces both processed corn products such as flour and candy bars as well as whole grains such as breads and pasta sauces.
Glen Ellyn was founded in 1887 by John Lochlin and James Craig. It is the second largest town in Illinois after Chicago. The population of Glen Ellyn was over 50,000 in 1990.
