Glen Carbon is a small town in Johnson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria metropolitan area. Glen Carbon has a strong agricultural history and is known for its corn production. The town was founded on November 25, 1857 by John Aiken and his brother James Aiken. They named their new village after the carbonaceous asteroid that they found in what is now central Illinois. The name stuck and the town prospered until World War II when it lost much of its agriculture to consolidation and mechanization. However, since then the town has seen significant growth in trade and industry due to its location close to major highways and other industrial areas. There are currently two primary businesses in Glen Carbon- one as a grain elevator operator and the other as an engineering services company- but most residents work in either service or manufacturing sectors outside of their homes. The demographics of Glencarbon reflect this trend: about 60% are white, 30% are black or African American, 10% are Latino/Hispanic, 5% are Asian American, 3% are Native American/Alaskan Native (25%), 1% each from German, Italian (75%), Polish (25%), Irish (10%) and English backgrounds; 2% identify asesian; 0.5% as Unaffiliated

Glen Carbon is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bloomington-Normal metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1887 by John Covington and his family. The first post office in Glen Carbon was established in 1890. In 1911, the community had a population of 309; however, it decreased to just 143 by 1920. In 1930, the population again decreased to 112; however, it rose to its current size of 539 in 2010. In 1907, John Covington donated land for a school which would serve the town's children. The first Glen Carbon High School opened on May 12, 1912; it served students from pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade until 1978 when it became an elementary school again. Glen Carbon has also had a Normal University campus since 1915 which provides undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as many job training programs for local businesses and employees. The town has experienced several economic setbacks over time including a major flood that destroyed most of the town's infrastructure in 1951 and another floods that caused extensive damage in 1972 and 1993 respectively. However, over time the community has successfully rebuilt much of its infrastructure with help from donations and investment from outside sources such asnormal university campuses (1995), private companies (1996),andthe state government (2002). Additionally,the village board created an economic development committee which helps promote business opportunities within the village while working towards creating additional jobs withinGlen Carbon itself
The Glen Carbon area was first settled in the 1830s. The community was originally named Athol, but it changed to Glen Carbon in 1835. The town's first store was built in 1836 and its first post office opened in 1840. In 1861, the town became a railroad stop and by 1865, it had a population of around 100 people. In the early 1960s, Glen Carbon began to lose its commercial importance and by 1970, it had only 10 residents. However, the town has continued to thrive since then as a cultural center with a variety of businesses and cultural events.
