President James K Polk ordered 40 warships to be built between 1841 and 1845 but no one saw action in World War II because America didn’t enter into World War II until 1941 after many delays caused by funding shortages at home. During World War II, many naval vessels were lost due to enemy torpedoes or mines laid along coastal areas near where they were stationed (Navy). Many items belonging to these lost sailors are still collectible today such as medals, buttons, watches etcetera (Upper Great Lakes Naval Museum). Today there is a museum dedicated exclusively to honoring those who served with distinction in our nation’s military during times of war called “Hollywood High School: The USN History Museum” located at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard outside Hampton Roads Virginia (CBS Baltimore Sun article dated October 13th 2016).
