The Glen Carbon National Guard was organized on September 15, 1912. The first items donated to the guard were rifles and shotguns. The first commander of the guard was Colonel A.J. Armstrong and he served until 1913. From 1913 to 1916, Colonel John Fetterman served as commander of the guard. In 1916, General John J. Pershing took command of the national guard and in 1917 became its first colonel general. After World War I ended, General Pershing turned over command of the guard to Lieutenant Colonel George Clements on January 1, 1918. On July 1, 1918, President Wilson declared all U S military forces surplus property and all officers and men serving in the Guard were ordered home with pay. By order of Secretary Knox on October 15, 1918 all equipment including weapons and ammunition was destroyed at Park Ridge Armory in Glen Carbon Illinois as partSparte for disposal purposes only

In 1890 it was redesignated as Company E (2nd Battalion) of the 29th New York State Militia and in 1898 as Company K (2nd Battalion) of that regiment. On January 6, 1903, at White Sands Missile Range in southeastern NM by order of President William McKinley all National Guards from across America were gathered together for what would become known as "The Great Gun Show." This event was an occasion to showcase national guard products and equipment to potential buyers from all over America.
