The town first began to prosper as a bedroom community for workers at Wrigley Field, then North American Aviation Company's manufacturing plants on the West Side of Chicago From its inception, Glen Carbon had an agricultural center with food processing businesses such as Goudreau Feed & Grain (now Goodyear) and Pappas' bakery; two hospitals; five churches; twelve schools; three water towers; one post office; and four hotels. In addition, several large companies including Armour Manufacturing Company (later Allis Chalmers), Hormel Foods Corporation, Wacker Electric Corporation and Sears Roebuck&Co., Inc.'s Menard's Department Stores operated important facilities here such as a sawmill and powder works which supplied munitions manufacturers during World War I and II. Today much of what once characterized Glen Carbon has been replaced by high-rise condominium developments or shopping centers catering to suburban commuters who now make up a majority of its population of 1,914 people according to the 2010 census. However remnants of downtown storefronts remain along East Douglas Street filled with local artisans making handicrafts from woodcarvings through quilting fabrics made from patchwork squares sewn together using dyeing thread provide unique experiences not often found elsewhere in Chicagoland These buildings are evidence that while many residents have left for greener pastures over recent decades - some aspects of life here continue unchanged even after more than half a century since Glencarbon's heyday as an industrial center

The arrival of these pioneers marked a turning point for Glen Carbon. From its humble beginnings, the town rapidly became an important center for coalmining and shipping in early Illinois. By 1850, Glen Carbon had become one of two largest coal mining towns in Illinois; it also developed into one of the most influential centers for religious worship in central Illinois during this time period (the other being Peoria). The town's growth led to increased traffic on local roads and helped make Glaswegian settlers one of Chicago's most successful ethnic groups during this period."
