In 1912, the first roasting plant was built in Glen Carbon and it continued to be used until 1978. At one time, Glen Carbon was home to one of the largest coffee markets in the Midwest. There were numerous stores that sold all types of coffee, from light to dark roast. Coffee fans would go throughout the city looking for their favorite bean or shopkeeper who knew how to roast them right. Glen Carbon is a community in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was founded by native Americans in 1836 as "Glen Carbon" after a location on the Grand River near present-day Carbondale. In 1854, it became a county seat of Cook County and Glen Carbon continued to serve as its county seat until 1959 when that office was transferred to Rockford. The first settlers in Glen Carbon were white men from Ohio who arrived in 1836. They named their community after what they thought would be an auspicious site on the Grand River: "Glencarbon" means "lodge on the Great Miami". The first post office opened in 1840 and remained open until 1959. At that time, Rockford became the new county seat; however, Glen Carbon still served as its county seat for a brief period (1959-1960). In 1854, three years after opening his initial store in Glencarbon, George Stephenson built what would become one of Cook County's largest cotton plantations: Stephenson's Grove. Stephenson's Grove comprised over 100 acres (40 hectares) of land with five miles (8 km) of main street and 50 miles (80 km) of railroad track running through it. It soon became one of Illinois' leading cotton plantations and produced more than two million pounds (1,400 metric tons) of cotton per year during its heyday between 1865 and 1912. During this time frame, other significant businesses located around Glencarbon include Sausage Works which made sausages for many restaurants throughout Cook County; Goudreau Brothers Cigar Store which manufactured cigars for wealthy individuals throughout Illinois; and Henson & Sons Cleaners/Dyers which did extensive work cleaning homes and providing janitorial services throughout the area during this period
The town of Glen Carbon, Illinois was founded in 1838 by a group of men led by Revolutionary War veteran and surveyor Ebenezer Green. The community grew rapidly due to the opening of the Illinois Central Railroad and other transportation improvements. By 1860, Glen Carbon had a population of 500 residents. The town declined during the American Civil War, but resumed its growth afterwards. By 1930, Glen Carbon had an estimated population of 1,500 people. However, thetown's economic decline following World War II led to its total sudden abolition in 1951.
