The name "Glen Carbon" appears to be derived from "Gleann Carron," meaning "hill of colors." The first settler in what is now Glen Carbon was James Fenton in 1825. A post office called Glencarbon was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. Located on the county line between McLean and Vandalia counties, it served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1868, developer John Hickey built a mill on the river near present-day Glen Carbon. This became one of the leading mills in Illinois; it continued production until 1903. The mill burned down on December 5, 1918, with no one injured. A local store began serving settlers in about 1840 and grew into an important commercial center for many years before being destroyed by fire around 1880. The present-day grocery store opened its doors in 1959. In 1907, Glenn Carbone High School was founded here; it closed during World War II but reopened after the war as Glen Carbon Junior Senior High School (now attached to nearby Griggsboro). A post office called Carbone located approximately two miles east of town started service on November 25th 1870; it served until October 15th 1906 when mail stopped arriving due to railroad construction south of town - this left Carbone with no postal service other than that provided by horsedrawn wagons which delivered mail via road trip from Carbone toSpringfield every weeknight throughout most ofsummertime... finally wire transfer service arrived from Bloomington offering much needed income for residents of both towns during these difficult days

At first, business was slow due to lack of transport options available overland; however, with increased traffic along the Illinois River thanks to railroads being established throughout Cook County starting in 1868, business began growing rapidly at Glen carbon. By 1870, when Glencarbon incorporation occurred, it boasted a population of 1 500 residents! The success of this venture allowed for upgrades such as better water supply and sewerage systems (which still exist), more powerful streetlights (which helped improve safety during night hours), and even an opera house! These advancements helped make Glencarbon one of the most thriving cities in Cook County by 1916! This progress was also aided by investment from outside sources such as insurance companies who saw potential value within this burgeoning economy! Today, Glenn carbon remains one of America's fastest-growing municipalities with Over $125 million being invested into various initiatives since 2000 alone!!!!
